Hi Guys,
I have been having a little trouble lately starting my V8 GenIII Calais.

Most of the time it starts 1st go, but occasionally it takes 2 or 3 tries.

The car has been idling rough for a while now, but seems to have the same get up an go as when I first got it.

Yesterday the car wouldn't start at all. It turned over but wouldn't fire up.

NRMA came, hit the tank with a rubber mallet while I was cranking the car, no go.

He then pulled the fuel pump relay and replaced it with just a wire and the car started, he then put the relay back and it ran all the way home.

He said it was the fuel pump, and I should get it changed ASAP.

My questions:
Could it just be the relay?

If it is the relay where do I get one cheap?

Could it be anything else?

Are there any easy fixes or things to rule out before I change the fuel pump?

If it is the fuel pump how much should it cost me (approx) to get it done at a mechanics (no not Holden, I don't plan to do an armed robbery to pay for the fix)?

I have a mate that is handy with cars so how easy is it to change the fuel pump myself (with his help)?

Will I need any special tools or equipment?

If I do decide to replace the fuel pump myself where is the best place to purchase one (I am based in Sydney)?

About how much would a fuel pump cost?

Are there any links to any other threads that have dealt with this issue (I looked but couldn't find one)?

I am on a limited budget so any suggestions are gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance guys.

My car broke down on a Sunday, peak hour 1130am on the far right lane of traffic on King Georges rd near Punchbowl road coming from homebush. Luckily had NRMA to take it away. Fuel pump died, tried to chug away but just wouldnt. So busy i couldnt merge to the left lane.

Dont let it happen to you. Especially if you have no roadside assist.

Fuel pump relay shouldnt be more then $10 from like Bursons, Repco etc

New pump genuine $265
New Fuel Lines x2(rubber lines from pump) $55
Labour $176
Total - $496

I also had some other work doen at the time.

You might wanna do yourself, but remember, fuel tank weighs alot even when half full. Tank alone is about 10kg-15kg ish and i think these tanks have anti siphon thingys in them.

And theres plenty of threads about it

If the labour is only 170ish I will get it done by the mechanic. better that way.

I do have roadside but all the same don't want the agro.

Thanks again,

Greg.

Well surprisingly, I got no honks or flashes of high beams. Was sitting in the car with hazards on.

As my mate said, if it looked like a bomb, i prob would've.
