Time for some new wheels! VT Calais Internationals bought off of Gumtree - paid a pretty penny for these as they were in good condition, but as they all had some blemishes I still had to pay for all three to be diamond-cut (refaced) and re-cleared. Add some Michelin PS4S rubbers on top and this was easily the biggest expense yet!

Time for some paint work! The bumpers had a bunch of scratches and bumps from doing their daily duties and I thought I would have a go at fixing them up. The bad news:
  • The paint I ordered didn't match (yes, there are TWO recipes for H114 Tungsten Mica, one is a complete abomination, that's the one I got)
  • The 2k Clear spray paks I ordered turned out to be black paint (always spray a test!)
  • I think I filled and sanded the dents about 4 times each
  • I went too heavy on sanding in a few spots and the plastic got all furry!
  • A couple of times I either put too much or too little hardener in the filler and went off too quick/not at all
  • I bought a replacement rear bumper off Scumtree and had it shipped up the coast (omg, NEVER ship a bumper) only to find the so called "wrecker" that took it off the donor car, ground off all the mounting clips on the inside so it was useless. Got my money back, but not for the shipping.
The good news:
  • I learnt a TONNE about fixing bumpers!
  • I did a side view mirror which looks better than factory
  • Overall they are much better than what they were, even if the paint doesn't match :)
  • I found out genuine Calais bumpers are still available from Holden and ended up buying new front and rear bumper covers from Holden for when the car gets its professional respray, because.. purity...
  • I tackled the engine cover too and it came out sweet, after 90 minutes of masking :)

Time for a bit of go for the old gal - I had ummed and ahhed about doing headers and a tune, then finally decided to go ahead as it just never sounded like an 8 and I just needed a little more poke. So, run down is:

  • K&N Air filter in stock intake box
  • JHP air intake tube - "GTS" style
  • Pacemaker Tri-y headers, ceramic coated
  • Redback high-flow cats
  • Custom 2 1/2 exhaust and Berklee mufflers
Nice throaty rumble too it, but no drone, not too noisy (this was supposed to be my "quiet" car). Good result on the dyno as well.

Nice car and with only 73 000km? Take care of it.
Will do! She is in for some love at the resto paint shop at the moment - my back room full of Holden NOS bits and pieces will be going on, and more.. stay tuned!

A few in-progress shots of the car - I think they have found every little ding and have block down the sides, so far so good. Also a bit of love for the rain cowel with some Bowdens Mr Black..
