Hey, I have a VX Berlina that's done 92,000 kms on the clock, and has been looked after pretty well (has never been flogged for all those k's). The problems I'm having with the car, are just electrical. The center power window buttons are broken, and ever since that happened the light on the traction control button wont go back on, which now feels like the steering never loosens up; it feels stiff all the time. I've checked the fluids, and all are fine. So I gathered it was something electrical causing that. The next problem is the fuel gauge. I reckon empty is halfway down passed the quarter mark, and it doesn't accurately tell how much fuel there is. I'll drive somewhere for an hour and it wont budge, then all of a sudden it will drop dramatically, then go up, and then back down. So, I've never had the car less than half full... But It's annoying. Are these problems easily fixed at a general mechanic, cheaply? I think this car needs to be tuned as well... Anyways, as mods are concerned. I feel that for some reason the torque is restricted a lot (when you hold it flat 0 - 100). If I put an after market sports exhaust (not extractors) and changed the intake, would that free up some of it's power, or is this computer related? To my knowledge, the best thing to do is free up the intake and exhaust for significant power gain. Is this correct? If so, what are some brands I should be looking at? Or regardless of all those power mods, is it more wise to just put the money into cosmetics, like shiny rims; or new head-unit and speakers? Thanks for reading
Holden Commodore VT VX Power Electric Window Center Master Switch Control Button | eBay and also Commodore Holden VT VX VU power & traction control button switch pair x2 | eBay just to give an example of how cheap the replacment buttons are mate
ive got a berlina as well , does your digital fuel display the correct liters used / left etc , i find my trip computer is deadly accurate for how much fuel ive used etc , just press the mode button on the dash and see the different display at bottom right of your dash display , my steering also feels abit like u describe i think thats just how they are , also with the mods i have a 2.5 inch lukey exhaust and ill tell u now you wont gain power from a mod like that its purely for a bit of sound , my vx is same as yours they feel like they have a massive flat spot before they start revving abit higher , there pretty average down low when flooring it lol
Thanks man, I'll grab the switch tomorrow I usually just have the mode set to how much km's I can do, before it runs out. I was also reading up on the threads here, and I can either get an xforce and Difilippo, right (there was another one called redback, as well)? These seem expensive as hell for the whole system... Should I just go to the wreckers and look for a VX S exhaust (if it's a sports type with extractors), and put them on with an after market high-flow cats? The exhaust systems confuse me a bit, but prob if I continue reading, I'll pick it up XD
if like me you just wanted a little bit of sound just grab sumthing like ive got Lukey 2.5" Cat Back Exhaust Commodore VT VX VY V6 I.R.S w/ Rear Resonator | eBay , ive had mine a few months and theres nuthing wrong with it , these are from the cat back which is all u need , ive had extracors on all my other cars and u just dont need them on a stock engine , about all they do is make the exhaust a little bit deeper sounding , first thing i got for my stock standard vx was a nice set of mags , followed by lowered suspension and an exhaust , sum window tint and a decent stereo , all very cheap [apart from the suspension ] lol was only 2 grand but is such an improvement over standard
Lukey 2.5" Catback, VX Commodore S Pac + short ram air sytem - YouTube What does it sound with the resonator? Is the resonator required in NSW? I can't remember the db and exhaust rules. My Dad used to do the certs for car mods before leaving it because of the new RTA rules, I think it's 80 or 90 db from memory. That exhaust sounds phat
Power window switches are reasonably cheap, Holmart sells them, though check all fuses first. Stiff steering, perhaps a bodgey pump? Put it in N and rev while moving the wheel, if it gets lighter the pump is on it's way out. VT/VX's are perhaps the worst fuel gauges in the known universe, they are woefully inaccurate. However if it is running out before "E" then the float is most likely out, needs re-calibrating. Yep, anyone worth his salt. As far as torque, they have a bit, but these are very heavy cars. 0-100 comes up in about 9 secs, if you change the whole exhaust, tuned it - might help a little. But don't expect much. No, significant requires forced induction. By changing over the intake and exhaust systems you can make the car breath a whole lot better, but the gains are proportional to the original system. In the case of the VX, they have a half decent system to be honest. Others will disagree with me, but to reap the full benefits you need to do a tune as well. Best value for money lies there mate. Powering up engines is really counter productive in a big, heavy passenger car like a Berlina. Are you going to race this thing? If not, I reckon get some nice rims, don't over lower it, keep her a nice comfy cruiser. Put a decent little stereo in it, tuned to your favourite music and hit the open road. All the money you save on performance upgrades can be spent on a holiday to the beach or something. With street cars I am always of the opinion that you want smoothness and comfort. You want the engine to work to it's most efficient, nice and smooth with some longevity. That's not to say an exhaust re-work won't help, but don't expect to suddenly become Andretti.
