i was driving my car when it was raining and the car started sliding from side to side then hit a tree. The car did not crank i had to get it towed the driver said it might be a safety cut of valve (inertia switch) that needed to be reset

can anyone help

Read your manual and it will say that if the air bags and/or seat belt tensioners are ever activated, the vehicle will not start as it's then considered unsafe.
If those weren't triggered, then perhaps it still measures and excessive G-force and does the same.
Contact someone with a Tech2. If it can be reset as opposed to replaced, I'd say that's the only way. :)
I'd like to know too.

Sounds obvious, but is the car still in Drive? Needs to be in Park or Neutral.

depending on the impact may have jarred relay loose or battery may have moved
either way after any accident the car will require a competent inspection to make sure it is still safe to drive

vs commodore
The SRS module (once it deploys the airbags) sends a signal to the BCM that tells the BCM not to allow the vehicle to start. The SRS modules are once only use and cannot be reset with tech2 etc once airbags have fired.. Not too sure if you would need to reset the BCM after the airbags have been deployed of if it just resets itself once a new SRS module had been fitted and programmed to the vehicle. If the airbags didn't deploy, then maybe just the seatbelt pretensioners fired, which might also stop the vehicle from being started and driven as theyre also are part of the SRS.
