G'day all,

I've got a 2000 VX Acclaim which is cranking excessively before starting. It primarily happens during a cold start, as it starts well enough when it's warm. I've got as far as checking the battery. Had it in for a general service, and a day after getting it back, I noticed the starting problem.

One thing I noticed, when I leave the key in the 'ON' position, until the dash lights have worked themselves out, the car starts relatively quickly. No excessive cranking.

sounds like the fuel system is not holding pressure when the ignition is off. The fuel pump runs for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
Could be the fuel pressure regulator is stuffed or there is a leak somewhere. Does it blow any smoke when started after it has been sitting for a while as this would suggest a leaking fuel injector.

I had this issue on mine some time ago, swapped out the fuel reg which resolved it. Another part to consider.

Totally with Big Al, pressure issue, could be a few different things, even as simple as a perished return line.

How can I tell whether it's the regulator or not? (also, where is it?) if I ran a diagnostic, would I pick it up? No smokes blows when I start the car either, it just takes its time cranking. Starts first go every time though.

I've also noticed that my fuel economy has been shithouse lately. Could it be the ECT Circuit?
