Hey everyone, just picked up a new ride (01 VT)
The previous owner had the ignition barrel replaced, but now i have to use 2 keys.
I have the OEM key for the door(just a blade)
And i have the new key with the original fob for the ignition. Can i have the ignition barrel rekeyed
To the oem key. And only the boot button on the fob works. Lock/unlock dont. Please help me.

Regards
Brady Leighton

easiest way just drive to quality lock smith
show them the problem and book it in
i found they can r&r ignition barrel in half the time it takes me and recode it for only a few dollars more than just the recoding
if you are super keen you can do it yourself but i wont
as to the remote if you close the doors and press the drivers door snib down do all the doors lock and unlock
again locksmith can probably diagnose this quickly
ps i wouldnt classify this as urgent
stuck on side of road and cant unlock is urgent

Probably easier to mod the door keyway to take the new ignition key

i like to try and keep as close to stock where possible
otherwise it will be "i lost my keys and got new ones cut from my security card but they dont work"

Yes central locking with from inside the car works, and its pretty urgent as other people use my car and dont know how to get in/left it unlocked. They left it unlocked by the whole key thing and my subs and macbook got stolen:mad:

Other thing is i only have 50$ to fix it

For $50 buy a gregory manual
remove the ignition barrel and attempt to recode it yourself
i have done it to see if it can be done, took me all afternoon to recode it
locksmith takes half an hour if barrel is out
as for your remote, first step is to get another remote or someone with a tech2 to monitor the signal, either way well over $50

My ignition barrel was replaced by previous owner. I have two keys. New one with fob and other a blade. I just keep two keys on the keyring. Easy to tell them apart.

Are *you* using the blade key to lock the car ? Can you explain that to these other people ?

My fob does my doors so I don't know how easy or hard it is to use the key in the door .

It's easy. Take your ignition barrel out (10 min job since you have the key) and take it to a locksmith along with the door key and have the lock rekeyed. I'd expect to pay no more than $100-120 to have it done since you'd only be paying for labour.

Also a good opportunity to get a second key cut and coded for it.

Lock/unlock won't work if you've deadlocked it with the door lock.
