Hi guys, this has happened a couple of times. Driving along and the car loses power, the steering wheel locks as do the brakes, meanwhile the battery light is flashing as are most of the other lights. Once I turn the key off and start it up again it's fine to drive. Have taken to an auto-electrician and attached scanner but it didn't pick up any faults. Any suggestions?

Does the engine cut out or keep running?
It is VERY strange that the steering wheel locks. If you are sure it is looking up could be ignition switch?

The engine eventually cuts out. We thought that too - I broke the barrel on the ignition last year and when the car initially cut out we thought that may have been to blame. The ignition switch has been replaced though and it is still happening.

The most likely problem is the regulator on the back of the alternator is faulty

very common and quick fix

How would the regulator cause the steering to lock?

I think it addresses the loss of power. The steering wheel doesn't just lock the brakes become hard and engine shuts down.

Ah ok that's normal when engine is cutting out because no power steering and no engine vacuum to the brake booster.
