    Hey guys

Ive got my mates car at my place while he is away, there is a intermittent problem where the temp guage will skyrocket and starting sreaming HOT for a couple of seconds and then go back to normal. Any ideas what is causing this? I have checked and topped up the coolant level, and there aren't any leaks. I plan to take it in for a service next week, but would love a heads up beforehand if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

Start with the thermostat it may not be opening early enough and that's what usually causes that once the thermostat is open the water is flowing right

Could be an air lock in the cooling system.

In the top of the thermostat housing theres a screw. With the engine running at operating temp open this screw to bleed out any air, there should be a constant flow of coolant from here.

When does it start to get hot? If there is no leaks at all then yeah thermostat possibly. Or if it's getting hot whilst idling then cooling down when driving it could be the water pump

Hmm so...I had it serviced today

All that he found is that the coolant needs to be flushed and replaced and the radiator cap isnt holding pressure... this sound about right? or is there more to it

If the cap is faulty it will bleed coolant into the overflow but not pull it back when it cools so you end up with low coolant and overheating.

Just go buy a new cap, top up the coolant and see how it goes.
