Hi all, I'm hoping some one here can help me shed some light on a strange noise from the rear end.
I appreciate that it's very hard to diagnose a problem you haven't seen or heard, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

When I accelerate hard there is a knocking type noise from the rear, decelerating it seems fine.
I've also noticed that my left hand side is sitting up a little more than the right(Maybe a coincidence)..?
There is no wobble or vibration, so I wasn't really thinking it was the tail shaft it centre bearing.
Any help would be great.
Tones.

Just took it for another drive.
Sound more like a clunk clunk sound.
Doesn't happen in reverse.
I put it on jack stands but couldn't see anything obvious.
Guess I should check diff and gearbox oils.

Is it a continuous noise that increases and decreases with speed?

Or happens under acceleration only?

Or round corners without accelerating?

Only happens under acceleration. Fine in reverse. Right hand turns slightly worse.
I'm thinking maybe diff or axle?

i always reply this

it's a holden design fault because of the camber issue it causes the diff to resonate as the tyres wear, are your tyres worn?... it will disappear

sometimes changing tyre pressure will make it go away

yes you have a S2 but that only addresses toe in which cause the tyre to wear evenly but not fix the real problem

I'm thinking diff as well. Is it a LSD? If so, an oil change with the correct additive got rid of the clunking in my diff.

Tyres are new and are running at 38psi.
Yes it is a LSD, and have dropped the oil ready for a change tomorrow.
I was reading you need to change the pinion seal when putting the additive in??
Might pull the cv axles off tomorrow and check them out, and maybe check the bearings while I'm there.
Thanks for the feedback.

Forget to add that after changing the oil it did take a few days driving before the clunking stopped.

I changed my diff oil last week,
Nulon Heavy Duty Synthetic LSD 80w140 x 2 bottles (diff takes around 1.6litres)
Penrite LSD LIMSLIP Additive 150ml (took me a while to find this stuff)

When doing the diff, undo the filler nut first then the drain nut as you dont wanna undo the bottom first and realise you cant undo the top one.

As for the clunk, could be diff, could be loose suspension bolts or worn bushes somewhere.
Thats the fun of troubleshooting. woohoooooooo

I had a clunk from my front somewhere, never found out. Disappeared but for good measure, virtually gonna replace the whole front suspension such as shocks/bushes/sway bar links.

Did you guys replace the pinion seal?

Hopefully not so super cheap will have the additive.
I may then put it back together and see what happens, if the diff blows at least I'll know where the noise was coming from. Haha.

Just finished replacing my whole front end including the steering rack about 6 months ago.
The only thing I didn't replace was the sway bar.

Gotta love trouble shooting, if I wasn't such a tight ass, I'd take it to mechanic.
