Welcome to Just Commodores, a site specifically designed for all people who share the same passion as yourself.
Blow all tghe head bolt holes out with air. use an old head bolt with one side of the thread ground off a bit to clean out the bolt holes.
Installation of the cylinder heads is the reverse of removal procedures, noting the following points:
1. Place head gaskets in position over dowel pins on cylinder block.
NOTE 1:
ENSURE THAT 'ARROW' MARKING ON GASKETS IS FACING TOWARDS FRONT OF ENGINE.
NOTE 2:
Head gaskets have a special coating on both sides and care must be taken when installing head gaskets so as not to damage this coating.
NOTE 3:
The left hand cylinder head gasket is identified by a 'L' shaped cut out and the right by a 5.0mm hole. Both are visible on final engine assembly.
2. Carefully guide cylinder head into place over dowel pins and onto gasket.
3. Coat threads of cylinder head bolts with Loctite 242 sealant or equivalent (Holden Specification HN 1256 Class 2, Type 2) and install finger tight.
Tighten head bolts to the following sequence and in the order shown in Fig. 6A1-1-104.
NOTE:
It is important to follow the given procedure to avoid head gasket failure and possible engine damage.
5. Tighten all cylinder head bolts to 34 Nm.
The next step requires the use of Tool No.
E7115 with the torque wrench.
NOTE:
If a torque of 90 Nm at any time in step 6 is reached, STOP tightening that particular head bolt.
6. Tighten each bolt 90 degrees in the order shown.
7. Further tighten all bolts in the specified order to 90 Nm.
8. The remaining reinstallation of components is the reverse of removal procedures.
9. Start engine, check for oil, coolant, fuel and
exhaust leaks. Repair as necessary.
Torque to 34nm in the correct order. Then turn each bolt 90 degrees in the correct order with the torque wrench set at 90nm. If it reaches 90nm before the 90 degrees occurs then stop tightening and leave. If it reaches 90 degrees without getting to 90nm then, in the correct order, tighten to 90nm.
Are you using new head bolts or re-using the old ones?
They are tty (Torque To Yield) and not designed to be re-used, if you try to torque used bolts to spec they may break.
Stage 1: Torque in order to 34 Nm (That's what is in the gregory's manual)
Stage 2: Set Torque wrench to 90 Nm then proceed to turn 90° (If it clicks then stop and goto the next bolt in order)
Stage 3: Go in order again until all are at 90 Nm
90 Nm is in the gregory's manual for the V6
