i just bought a vy series one exec for 15000 and for comprehesive insurance it is 1000 a year. so it is not that bad. pretty cheap compared to some cars. it is cheaper to insurer a modern commodore than a magna. i want to change my head unit but the steering wheel controls cost about 300 to make it work with an aftermarket unit

nope, the interface is a blapunkt only thing, so only their stereos can interface with it.

You can however buy things to fit onto the controls to act as a wireless remote if your headunit supports it.

G'Day Frandy, from memory the gauges (which are autometer sport comp not the HSV ones as I wanted black to match my dash cluster) were about $100 each from American Autos, the binnicle I got from holden $140 (bit exy) and I bought the HSV adapter for the oil pressure sender unit to fit to the oil pump which was $75 I think, wired it all up myself and was a piece of piss to do, took about 3 hours all up. The head unit I had installed by Audiocom in Kal along with the plastic surround and replaced the speakers with pioneer splits in the front and pioneer 2 ways in the rear doors for $1300 all up which I consider good as that head unit was $1800 when first released. Make sure that your installer uses a plug that fits your original loom and wires the new head unit to that, so if you ever have to your old head unit fits back in with minimal problems. Stereo sounds alot better than the original head unit (especially with the 10 inch sub in the back!)

    Enjoy

Cameron, they do make a plug, although you cant get one that plugs straight into your head unit and then into the cars wiring loom, it is a male plug for the main wiring loom and you have to solder the ends of your stereo to it then it plugs in, so there is no cutting of the original wiring, watched my installer do it and took all of 1/2 hour to solder together.

i bought two from autobahn, one goes into car, one goes into your HU and then they both connect together, i was going to install it myself but, when i got it home, the connector for the car and my HU were too big, i cant remember the brand, but this way involved no soldering. i had mine installed professionally today

Cameron, yea my car would be noticably different to yours I have 3 extra seats and my cargo area is covered.... I have a VY Berlina wagon but apart from that everything is the same with the interior (I think your stereo might be black instead of the grey which I have), when you get your stereo installed make sure they use a plug so no chopping of the main loom is done and also make sure you turn off your stereo display in your instrument cluster via your start up menu before you disconnect the stock head unit.

    Enjoy

    stereo for VY

I have a vt and am about to buy a VY.

I want to move my system to the VY.

Will the controls on the steering wheels still work?

sheesh, read up around the forums before you post a question like that.

If you're headunit supports a remote then most likely yes you can read up on a CAT or something along those lines, you dont get full functionality tho which sucks (eg: you dont see the station on the display)
