Hi guys new here and to be honest, don’t know too much about cars. So any help/info appreciated.
Recently my VY has been ‘overheating’ randomly, mainly when sitting at lights and in traffic. Last night the needle slowly moved up to hot as we were doing 80 km? Never done that. Stopped and checked levels and Coolant level seemed fine. Also when you pop the bonnet you can feel the heat in the air but the radiator hoses and cap are warm. Not hot like I’d expect?
Has recently had oil replaced and coolant flushed and replaced.
I want to take to mechanic but not very trusting after getting stung $940 to replace 4 brake pads and topping up brake fluid. I’ve read a few other threads relating but not exactly the same and they say maybe thermostat? I plan on replacing it today (once stores open) but any other ideas? Thanks Cass

yea just put a new thermo in it, do it yourself its super easy,

id consider getting a new ECU coolant temp sensor too

u may still have air pockets in your coolant, so bleed it

is your fan coming on?

and reset the ECU by leaving battery off for half hour, after u put new parts in it

Hey mate thanks for the reply. I have replaced to thermostat. (Forgot all about disconnecting battery, have done so now)
Took it for a brief drive after replacing thermostat, About 1km, and check alternator alert came up on dash? Also still heating up.
Fan comes on as soon as temp needle goes over halfway. Can then hear/see second fan kick in not long after it.
Will try bleeding it.

This happens to my cousin's VY, one minute it overheats then he pulls over turns the ignition off then starts and no problem.

my VY S supercharged series II suddenly started overheating for the first time. Had it
for years and not once did it overheat so i find it strange as also did a full service less
than a month before. had a mechanic come over to check it out.. he mentioned some
kinda pump, hose or somethin but didn't mention a new thermo replacement or a new
ECU coolant temp sensor. not sure what to do, thinkin of replacing everything related
with the cooling and temp. I'm a complete newb though but really wanna sort it out
and make sure it's all sweet. hasn't let me down once, been runnin smoothly from day one

cheers for your post,, will definitely keep those in mind.

as for "bleeding it" if you don't mind explaining what that means and how it's done, please mate

when u fill the car with new coolant u end up getting air pockets in your coolant, and when the car runs the air pockets screw with the pressure obviously, so you gotta get them out, look on youtube

ecu temp sensor dont cost too much neither does a thermo, put them in yourself. you may need a new gasket for your thermo housing.

Replace the thermostat, which located behind the Throttle body,
mongrel of a job, and a bit fiddly being the location of the thermostat housing,
also replace the elbow hose.
Allow plenty of time and take you time doing it.
Then bleed the system with all 3 bleed screws, but don't unscrew them to much [say half a turn] because if they fall out,
there will be a few choice words said, even more if you can not find it.
