I've found some older posts on this so thought I would post a new thread. Both my front hubs have become noisy there is a noise while driving around 60 to 80kmh and when you jack the car up and spin them they are noisy, the left is worse though they still spin freely with the wheel on. I am going to replace them both and just wondering whether after market ones are any good and what brands to go for. I can get genuine for $275 a pair or after markets are around $100. Reason I am asking is a drive shaft place in Sydney that sell son e-bay does them for $97 and I have bought a CV shaft off them before for a Pulsar and it was fine, still going strong. I am a bit wary as with other parts such as radiators there is good after market and crap. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.
I brought the cheapest r/f wheel hub I could find off ebay, I forget the seller so will see if I can find the item later tonight. A month later it had movement in it. Cost $55 inc postage I think.
i brought a pair from this company from ebay back aug/sept 16 could be the same company based in sydney they offer 24 month warranty for the vt-vz only replaced the right and no problem so far and its been on about a year and half https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLDEN-...045628?hash=item58cb6d14bc:g:Cn8AAOSwjVVV16jZ
Buy genuine bearings if you want them to last another 10-15 years. Cheap bearings are made from cheap steel with cheap grease and generally will fail a lot sooner than you would expect.
Thanks, I bought a CV shaft for a Pulsar off this company a few years ago, it is still working fine. How many km have you done on the new hub?
Agree with above comments on cheap after-market hubs, they are not good and not worth getting. I sent several back to the same internet seller a long while ago for "loosening up" issues where they simply allowed wheel wobble to occur after sever weeks operation. Spend a bit more and buy from a reputable parts dealer. Cheers.
no from vr and newer commodores they change the hub design to a one piece unit held in place by three bolts
never had a reason to look at the bearings on either the VT i used to own or the stato i own now, never realised I play Old holdens not new ones lol new ones just to go buy parts for the old ones
I ended up buying a pair of Machter branded hubs from e-bay and so far so good. The ones on the car were original (180,000km) with the left side being the noisier of the two. The original hubs were branded SKF on the back plastic cover, the new ones are branded on the hub face. Interestingly the original right hand side hub came off easy and the black plastic cover on the back was about half way out, no idea how that happened most probably like it from new. The left one was a bit rusted to the knuckle and rotor, a bit of WD40 and a light tap and off it came. One question if anyone knows, the torque range for tightening the 3 bolts do you go close tot he max setting and does applying Loctite to the threads cause torquing errors?
Torque specs for front hub bolts is 100 to 115Nm I've always torqued them to 115Nm with just a small drop of Loctite on the bolts and never had any issues
Anybody else having trouble removing the hubs, I can't get a socket on the head of the bolts at the back of the hub. Do you need a special tool???
most hubs are fitted with a allen key bolts unless yours have been change, i have a set of allen key half inch drive sockets and there was one bolt i had trouble with trying to get the tool into the head because of room when you add the ratchet or sliding handle bar
The diagram and instructions below are from VZ, but should be the same as yours. I once cut down an Allen key and used a ring spanner on it for leverage.
Thanks very much to you both for your assistance, I didn't realise they were an Allen head bolt retaining the hub, I will check it out, nice diagram dgp, thank you. Regards Neilyas
