Iv got a vy series2 spack 3.8.. And its got a real bad ticking problem I replaced the lifters yesterday and if anything, the noise has got worse.. Any Ideas to wat the problem could be? Cheers
I had a ticking problem a while ago in my vz, turns out I had blown my cat converter and all the insides were rattling around?
the ticking noise could be a few things... does it get louder with temperature or when under load? is it all the time or just some of the time?
Its not the cat cos i dnt have 1.. Comin from behind throttle body only.. And is noisy all the time.. Its deff lifter noise.. I was thinking oil pressure?
Could be timing chain stretched out or damaged cam lobe from sticking valve or old lifter. You can feel a knackered timing chain with the accessory belt off, plugs out and rock the harmonic balancer/crank back and forth with both hands. It will slap if it's the problem. Lobe damage can be seen by turning the engine over by hand slowly with the plugs again out and the rocker covers off. Closely watch each rocker action for any sticking or strange action.
I thought the lifter noise was ' standard' in the ecotec.. its a known issue.. I notice mine goes away after a fresh oil change..
It is a known issue but mines louder than normal.. Nothing iv tried has worked.. Replacing them, additives etc etc I had a listen last night and im sure its coming from the inlet manifold
The valley cover on the inlet manifold is only 7-8mm thick and readily transfers noise from underneath it. The only thing thats in the manifold that it could be is the pcv. I'll post a pic in a sec of a cam I just pulled out of an eco with 190k on it. Was a stock old mans car with a sticking valve/lifter. If the lifter repeatedly loses contact with the cam it grinds the top off the lobe real fast. Back in 10.
Have seen the serpentine belt (big long fan belt) that are old or have gotten hard and have cracks in them make ticking noises ,spray some water on it at idle and see if it quietens if it dose go get a new one.
Il give the belt thing a go.. I got told it cld be the cam but are there any other sounds associated with that being the problem?
No other sounds. It just sounds like a lifter but worse. If you can turn it over by hand while watching the rockers closely a damaged lobe will make one of them not get full lift and open and close strangely. If a valve is sticking, the rocker will go loose and float.
Il have to try it.. Saw a guy before and oil pressures good, so only thing left is cam how much is an aggressive cam for the ecotecs?
Mate how many kms and has it been a serviced car as the one killer of holden v6 is oil changes.look in the cap ,is it clean or claggy. If not a serviced car they do liffters and spin bearings
Looked under the rocker covers with a mechanic and wen changed the lifters n he said its the cleanest v6 hes ever seen 175 000 kms but have another engine @ 100 000kms to replace if needed
