My flatmate has a 03 VY Series2 v6 ute and it has been making a weird noise when you hit bumps and pot holes ect...

It sounds exactly like there is a bunch of beer bottles in a milk crate in the back (I only know that sound because I brew my own beer) and no there isn't any beer in the back, check that straight away ;)

I jacked up the car thinking maybe the exhaust was hitting on something and its not fouling on anything?

    Any ideas?

The only thing I think it could be (and a ling shot at best) is a few months ago he had a breather hose come off the fuel tank and the mechanic may have left a tool or a few screws floating about in the tank trunk under the tub?

Fark...I was hoping that wasn't going to be thrown around.. Might take it to a mates workshop and put it up on the 4 post hoist and have some one shake the car while I stand under it, to see if that's it....

Just get under there and give the cat a good whack, it should rattle if it's the culprit. Better yet, unbolt the exhaust and have a look inside the cat.

May be silly, but check the jack and tire iron under the passenger seat? may not be fully secured.
I had the same problem a few days ago.

Ok well I know its an old post of mine, but we found the problem yesterday. We put it up on a mates hoist and it was the shock absorber sleeves rattling. We just tightened them up by twisting them and it fixed it....

Hope this helps someone else with the same issue if they ever come across it.

    Cheers

not too sure on ur model of car but on mine i had an exhaust brace/bracket thingy that had fractured and made noise on every bump. grab a rubber mallet and get under the car and give a few things a love tap, thats how i fing alot my loose bits and rattles.
