- VZ V6 One Tonner & LX SL/R 5000
Hi all,
A week ago a had an overheating issue with my VZ Alloytec One Tonner. The overheat warning was displayed on the dash (as well as the temp gauge in the red that I didn't notice!) so I pulled over to investigate the problem. When I removed the radiator cap I quickly discovered it was broken. As I was only 10 mins away from home, I topped up the radiator, put the broken cap back on and drove home with the temp gauge sitting just over a 1/4.
The next day, I bought a new radiator cap & some coolant. First I drained the radiator, then filled it back up with coolant until it started to overflow from the radiator's bleed screw. With the radiator cap uninstalled I then tightened the bleed screw, started the car with the heater on to circulate the coolant through the heater core. I was waiting for the temp gauge to rise and for the thermo fan to come on. The temp gauge did rise to about a 1/4 but the thermo fan never came on (this was after about 20 mins).
I then topped up the radiator with the bleed screw removed until it overflowed again, tightened the bleed screw, continued to fill until the fluid level was at the radiator cap level & also topped up the overflow reservoir.
Took the ute for a 20 minute test drive (temp just slightly above 1/4), got into the drive way and check underneath the car for leaks and all seemed to be OK. I noticed that the thermo fan still wasn't engaged so I let the car idle for a further 10 mins. Came back, still no thermo fan and the temp gauge had moved only ever so slightly. So I drove the car into the garage and shut down the engine. When I did, I instantly notice steam from the bonnet and that sweet, sickly smell of boiling coolant! Opened the bonnet and the coolant had boiled over and was dumped onto the floor.
I thought I have solved the problem when I found the radiator cap broken and replaced it but not to be! Also, I thought maybe the thermo fan might not be working but when I engaged the A/C both fans came on so it seems to be OK.
Any thought or opinions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
