HI alll, Would my VZ v6 automatic be capable of towing a car trailer with a Toyota HJ 4x4 short wheelbase on it . From Caboolture QLD to Newcastle NSW ?
I have no experience towing anything except a box trailer and a small van a few times . The car has a new medium duty Hayman Reece towbar but not sure exactly what it's rating is as it has no compliance plate . Thanks for any advice.

Firstly, find out what the towbar is rated to, then what the alloytec is able to tow. Then weight the HJ + the trailer. If its under, then your good to go.

Or, just hook the sucker up and tromp it. If she goes, then WIN!!!

Wouldn't think you could tow it legally. Hayman Reece towbar is rated to 2100kg. Landcruiser would weigh around 1750kgs and assuming it's a hire trailer it would be maybe 700+kgs so all up around 2500kgs. Certainly more than the 2100kgs rating on your VZ or towbar.

I reckon even a short wheelbase HJ would be pushing 2 tonnes. The medium duty HR is 1200Kg capacity from memory, even the heavy duty is around 2 tonnes as I recall. Factor in the trailer and you've got the best part of 3 tonnes behind you. Personally I'd be paying for a tow.

As said, check the Tare weight of both the trailer and the Cruiser and add them together. The VZ can tow a maximum of 2100KG with the correct towbar, if the total weight of the trailer and load is more than that, then you can't "legally" tow it. What you do is your choice though, but be aware that your insurance company will not want to know you if it goes pear shaped.

Nobody said the car couldn't do it, just that it was illegal and will void the insurance if the maximum towing capacity of the VZ is exceeded.

I am sure the VZ can pull the load no worries but as not_an_ aba_ fan has said it's the legalities that can get you in big trouble.
It's a very long way from Caboolture to Newcastle and I am inexperienced in these kind of things , that increases the risk .

The trailer might not be as heavy as you think....most are 90% aluminium
