Hi Folks,

My 05 SV6 has just passed the 30,000km mark and is due for a service.

My local Holden dealership Phoenix Holden in Wanneroo has quoted me $295 for what they call a 'major service'.

I just personally think that is a bit steep.

Does anyone have any other suggestions with regards to alternative servicing?

Down at Kingsway we have a K-Mart tyre & auto as well as a Ultra Tune. I know K-Mart use semi-synthetic oils and I have a felling it's also Castrol Magnatec same as Holden uses.

Any postitive or negative experiences or advice more than welcome and yep I would get them to do a 'log-book' service.

At $115 per hour labour costs, using Holden for servicing is a costly option.

cheers

Tom

What ever you do make sure they use the fully synthetic oil like Mobil 1, as has been motioned in a previous thread, the alloytec must use the correct grade or engine damage may result. The price Holden has quoted sounds about right but I am sure you can get a slightly better price else where as long as they do the full log book service - which does not affect your car warranty.

Cheers

Thats spot on as long you have the receipts and the log book stamped it won't void the warranty

the oil MUST be GF3 rated. otherwise u will get shocking fuel economy and yes, u will have engine damage. holden have developed an oil for all alloytec motors. would u rather have your car serviced by people who specialise in holdens or someone who may only work on 3-4 every week? i know who i would choose.

stay away from mobil 1. it has been proven to do more damage than any other oil.im a test done by SC

G'day Holden Mechanic,

I'm getting conflicting reports now on which oil to use....

Personally I'd rather take it to somebody who takes good care of the car and takes pride in their work. And the prices Holden charge in WA are already rich and they continue to sky-rocket.

My local Holden dealer has a carpark with all the cars crammed in like a tin of sardines and I've heard numerous stories (from different people) about having damage on their cars when they've picked them up.

I got my local mechanic in Wangara to do a log-book 30,000km service on it in the week for $178 using fully-synth Mobil 1.

The postings I've read on this board from numerous people seem to recommend Mobil 1 oil, so that's what it's got in it now for the next 7,500km.

Which oil do you use the in alloytecs?..

we use genuine Holden oil whitch is 10w-30 but it must have the GF3 rating because no supplier has yet developed an oil to minimise engine wear and improve fueleconomy. which is why holden have developed their own. and i regard to the parking yeah we have that issue as well but the mechanic is supposed to report any scratches and dents before they move the car. and it is also a wise idea do point out your scratches and dents if any to the service advisoer so if the dealer does daamage ur car it is easier to get them to fix it. hell ive hitcars 2 times this year. and it is supposed to be reported immideatley.

hope this helps Ya'

Drew,

Which oil do you guys use?

I've heard Castrol Magnatec, Castrol FMR/FMX, Mobil 1 and Fuchs.

I would of thought that a fully synthetic oil would of been perfect will no long term damage.

cheers
