This was kind of answered here:

cigarette-lighter-power-acc-not-workingl

But I just wanted a more concrete answer if anyone knows.

Is the cigarette lighter / 12v socket under the armrest in the centre console of a VZ a live or switched socket?

i.e. does it have power constantly or only when car is on

Thanks

p.s. yes I can probably figure this out when I get home with something that has a light and no battery, but I am at work and I am unsure if I have such a thing

Only when accessories are on , or the car is started . Otherwise it would drain your battery all the time

There is only drain on the battery if something is plugged into the socket and drawing power, meaning nothing plugged in then no drain.
