hi all, long time lurker, first post.
i havejust picked up a mint 04 berlina with 240,000 on the clock.
replaced plugs, coils, oil and filter (10-30 fully synthetic),
the problem is the berlina seems very gutless and weak over 3000 rpm.
i also have a 07 crewman with the same motor and trans with 220,000 on the clock and it has a whole lot more get up and go.
both motors run smoothly with no noises and both are well maintained.

i have done all the servicing on the berlina from diff oil, trans service, engine oil, plugs, coils, filter, air filter to cleaning the air flow sensor bet still getting shitty performance. the upside is the fuel economy at under 9L/100km

any idea how to get it pumping like the crewman or are berlinas detuned? tia and here's a pic of my ride.

Check that you don't have a hairline crack or an incorrect gap in one (or more) of your spark plugs . What brand did you use?

Vacuum leak?
Trans fluid old?
Clean all earth points in the engine bay and on the motor.
Clean battery terminals and make tighter than the hatch seal on a Scottish submarine.
Clean the MAF.
Clean the throttle body
Air filter clean?

the only thing i have not done is clean "all" the earth points.

i notice im getting alot of carbon sediment in my oil filter... i have thrown 2 filters out in the last 1000kms because of heavy carbon build up.
maybe carbon deposits are blocking the vvt?

this is the filter after 600 km on a new oil change

Pretty easy to remove the cam phasers and clean them with carby cleaner. I also clean the cam sensors with carby cleaner on a paper towel. Wet the seals with engine oil before reinstalling.

I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to clean the threads and contact surfaces of your earths. Behind the battery, two on each cylinder head, the two below the ABS unit.
