What can be the cause of a engine control relay being burnt?

When you say burn - I presume you mean electrically destroyed NOT a fire !!!

If NOT fire then perhaps an extreme voltage surge or short circuit.

if its the contacts that have slowly failed you end up with a poor connection and the condition gets worse from there, so extra heat higher contact resistance more heat etc

Wasn't exactly on fire but the outer shell of the relay did show signs of some type of overheating... Haven't opened it up yet tho

There wasn't any blown fuses or anything tho. That's got to be a positive right?

I had exactly the same situation 2 months ago. The casing of the ECU relay looked scorched.
Cause unknown!

I swapped it with the high beam relay (identical, but used least often) until I could get a replacement.

So did anyone figure out the cause for this or the solution or should I just replace and keep replacing? Tyia

Been having problems with my VZ starting intermittently, bought a brand new key, and was checking some other things and just noticed my Engine control relay looks a bit burnt on top also. Would like to know more about this too...
