Hey guys have a sv6 vz 04. using way to much fuel. out of 50L i got 295ks. Everytime i fill up to the car will not start. Takes for ever then comes up with check powertrain but no codes are logged. Could the fuel pump be causing the bad fuel consumption as well as not starting??

fuel consumption, probably not. Hard starting yes. Have you replaced the fuel and air filter?

could be the fuel pump on its way out, try belting the fuel tank on the bottom next time it wont start and see if that makes it start, also alot of problems come from low voltage in the battery so if it is an old battery, would not hurt to check the cranking voltage. if it drops below 10 volts its stuffed.

A dying fuel pump will make a high-pitched whining from the tank at idle (additional to idle being rough/stuttery). Driving will be fraught with hazard, with a rough engine (often still drivable at speed), stalling (e.g. RPM drops to a stall at traffic lights). A dead fuel pump will not feed to the engine at all and that is a tilt-tray job.

I've experienced 3 fuel pump failures in an old 3.8V6 — there is no mistaking a pump about to go. Belting the bottom of the tank won't do too much; it may get you home, but what you need is a new pump. Not a good idea to strangle the engine of fuel.

Some after-market Chinese-made pumps used as "quick-fits" by repairers must be avoided. Get a Bosch or high-end pump and hang the expense. Two cheapies failed at 570 and 820km intervals while the Bosch, costing $440 was money well worth spent.

Im having a whole heap of Issues with me VZ Calais at the moment. Im getting a very high pitched sound that I think is either behind the dash or from the drivers side of the engine bay. It seems to not do it when engine is cold and then as it warms up this high pitched sound starts, but its not a squeal and its not a whine like what you'd hear from the idler pulley bearing s etc. the only way I can describe it is its like how sometimes electrical appliances like older TV's would sometimes make a very very high pitched sound. When this happens the car loses maybe 10 to 15 % power. Sometimes as I accelerate, I can feel the car slightly lurching or rather lunging as if there is a blocked fuel injector or as if a fuel injector is cutting in and out. The spark plugs have just been replaced, so it cant be them unless one was so poorly made that it didn't even make 3000km with that I guess it could be the ignition coil packs, perhaps one of them is dying / dead. It feels as if one cylinder is not producing power, however there is no rough idle or it doesn't seem out of balance and I cant hear a strange exhaust note. Is it possible that when a Battery is stuffed and the Alternator is running everything with any help from the battery that the alternator is making a very very very high pitched sound because its been under heavy load for many thousands of kilometers now? The engine seems to Turn over fine, but just this evening I got the Mrs to crank the engine while I measure voltage across the battery terminals. It dropped to 10.19 during the cranking. While engine was off, it measure 12.45v and while running the car voltage (according to Dash board after pressing mode plus set buttons during key turn) is between 13.9 and 14.3 this reason it varies is coz I have a aftermarket stereo and I am running large amps and a Subby. but if fan is off, stereo off and lights off voltage is 14.3 lights, stereo and fan on and it is 13.9 to 14.0. Now one answer would be to just by a new battery anyway, but while I can buy pone now, this will limit what else I can buy for the car as I only have about $1500 I can use to fix my car up. I will not have any money to spend on it for another 6 months. Long story, but I am pretty much broke. I prolly shouldn't even own a car like a VZ Calais as even with 17" Rims it costs me $250 for two new import tyres and a wheel alignment. i still need to get new shocks, replace the two idler pulley bearings, get an auto tranny service. If I find out I need other parts and then I went and bought a battery when I didnt really need it, I may find I am coming up short on money. Do you guys think maybe i should leave battery til last, could I bee causing long term damage to my alternator if my battery is not good. Could I have low fuel pressure with a bad battery even though alternator is producing 14.3v? man this is all starting to add up and get a little over whelming lol. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You mention the noise is not the idler pulley's. Then you claim they need to be replaced? Perhaps replace them and start from there.

Only way to check your battery accurately is to have a load test performed. A sparky will usually do this FOC if you purchase a battery from them.

Disconnect your amps from battery power and see if the noise reappears.
