My brother smacked the gutter front n rear doing a u-turn the other day and smashed the edge of the rear rim. Took a chunk of tyre with it too. Anyway on closer inspection the rim had cracks in it too. I looked over the other 3 rims and they looked OK. Has anyone else had the (VY SS) 05 VZ Storm rims fail?
if it took chunks out of the tyre when he hit it id expects the rim to never be the same, remember the middle of the wheel is bolted tight, if the rim is against the gutter having a sideways thrust pushing against it your putting force into the side of the rim basically trying to make it fold over, but no i havnt heard of those rims failing
Yes he broke the rim bad - but the cracks on the out side of the spokes running to the edge were all dark and grubby with ages of road grim in them - been there a while. The bit chunked out was bright fresh metal about 50mm long by 8mm deep into the edge of the rim.
Are the cracks only in the painted finish over the alloy? These will still allow ingress of road grime.... I've heard no feedback on these or other factory rims failing. Not that I actively look for it though.... Cheerz!
The factory have had feedback on VE SS-V rims failing but none of these that I know of. Aparantly there was a batch which were cast, tempered to the correct hardness, tested, painted and then baked at a very high temperature (in that order). :whistling Reaper
Hmm I did not dig into the paint on the rim - he (brother) had just told me that he had 1 of the front rims welded up 2 moths ago as the inside of the rim had a crack in it. So when I seen the rear with cracks too - I just assumed it was rooted too. So maybe not. They want $297 for a new one with none in SA. So it looks like a set of after market rims will be the go and 3 VY/VZ Storm rims for sale
