VZ Wagon starter motor goes but doesn't engage main motor

Hi

VZ wagon was working ok but went to start it yesterday, starter motor whirrs around like crazy but nothing happening to the main motor. Any idea on whats happening?

Solenoid on starter not throwing in.
Disconnect battery and
check wires are all attached to starter then if all attached firmly
tap starter with hammer a few times and try again.
I said tap it don't beat the krap out of it.

If this fails then new starter is easiest.
