For the small stuff (say under 12mm) I prefer 1/4", and for anything larger I prefer 3/8" (but thats just me ;)).

This is the 1/4" Kincrome socket set I use:
KINCROME Tools & Equipment - Product Catalogue

And this is the 3/8" Supatool socket set I also use:
KINCROME Tools & Equipment - Product Catalogue

I've added a 3/8" breaker bar to the Supatool socket set. I bought the 1/4" set from bunnings for $60 and the 3/8" set from Kmart for $70 (it was on clearance). This was about 2 years ago, so they may have gone up in price since then.

I've been lucky thus far and not had to use anything larger then 18mm. Which got me thinking, I've only got a no name Bunnings 1/2" metric set (which mind you I never use). I might have to go out and grab myself a decent 1/2" drive set, just in case I encounter bolts > 19mm.

Imperials come in handy when working on Commodores as stuff like the water pumps have both metric and imperial bolts.....:D:p

it's definately worth getting a breaker bar! a lot of bolts on a car have never been undone before and are fused together. it makes life a hell of a lot easier... saves your hands and your tools

If it is true it may explain why i got such a stern "NO we are the OPPOSITION" when I rang and asked them if they were the same as Kingchrome:yeah:

Yeah thanks, I have already been corrected once, read the whole thread.

Thanks for the link, TVR-161. I'll keep an eye on that seller in case he comes up with something I like when I have the money :)

Looks good, and that's the sort of kit I was planning on spending a $300 budget on when I had the money... I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

Hey mate, do you have spanners already?

If you’re looking for a set, hit up garage sales/house auction clearances ect ect. You should be able to make up a set of spanner for pretty cheap. Or you could go to supercheap when they have a 30% off tools sale and get a set of Supaworks Golds spanners. These are the prem quality tools supercheap sell, and are damn good for the price you pay. I’ve had a metric set (8-21mm) for around 2 years now, bought them for around $70 and have never let me down thus far. If you google “superworks gold good” you’ll find a fair few reviews on the tools, and many have said that they are damn good value.

I need a new socket set too. I have a supatool 100 piece set. Snapped the adapter on the smaller sockets for the 1/4", also in the market for a torque wrench. I'd rather buy a set once in my life.

I bought a Sidchrome 1/4" socket set, then got a Stanley 3/8" set and a Stanley 1/2" set. A mate bought a Stanley 1/4" set and it feels ALOT better then my Sidchrome 1/4" set. So I'd recommend Stanley, it's a bit cheaper to. I rekon their 1/4" sets are about $60, 3/8" sets about $100-$120, and the 1/2" sets just over $200.

Another thing I like about the better kits is each part has it's own part number, so if ya do break a socket or do ever lose one, ya can easilly replace it for a few bux.

Also, regarding people breaking ratchets.....that normally means the ratchet ur using is to small, or u should be using a breaker bar.

mate go sidchrome, kinchrome, stanley. If theres an tradetools near you, try out force brand tools. Ive got some and they dont go too bad.
Go snap on if you can afford it, Ive heard from blokes at work that snap on is all they use.
Minimax are also very good tools, socket wise, cant really beat japanese engineering

Minimax are great tools! I've got the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" ratchet and they have all been fantastic to use!

ive bought a few things through Sydney Tools and work related stuff through Tool HQ.
don't know what their socket set range is like, but I guess they would have some.

another place to check out would be All Tools
