Never look at a car as investment. Even buying a "classic" is still a risk and not all go up in value.

You being in a trade, get a commercial vehicle that you can claim part on tax, or better yet, lease one, that way 100% of your vehicle expenses are tax deductable, the amount you save on tax will be more than what a classic would increase in value, if it even does at all. Seeing as car values have pretty much remained static the last couple of years, most have even gone down for the high end stuff.

Then you can buy a nice car as a weekender or "town car" and basically have it paid for with your tax savings so would be like having a free car.

The only cars that can be purchased as an investment are generally already very expensive.

They have low km's for year, are desirable and made in limted numbers.

So in the world of Monaro that means, HSV versions (Coupe 4's etc) the 6's (believe it or not even though they are worth bugger all now they will appreciate at some time). and CV8R's. So the less that were made, the better.

Condition must be 100% with factory options fitted and in GC (not chopped to bits and modified).

You would keep this as a weekender to be driven very occasionally and have a daily to run up the k's on.

I don't need one, just look at cars from 30-40-50 years ago, what's worth $$$ today? You can assume based on those trends what will be worth more in the future - no time machine necessary.

Look at the GTHO, limited run and desirable - worth huge $$$ today. Older Monaro's are also worth pretty big $$$ today too.

The key is low mileage, rarer the better good unaltered condition. This is car collecting 101....

my impala was worth 3 grand when it came out in 1966. today its worth 8. based on inflation calculations, i made a 6 billion dollar loss on it.

the old HK monaro was worth fk all just over a decade ago then it skyrocketed. no one knows why, and no one can say whether itll stay up there.

a car is worth what someone will pay for it.

The GTHO can not be compared to a 2 door Commodore, for one, it was a history making car, fastest 4 door production car in the world. What is the "Monaro"? I'm not knocking it as a car, just the collectable part. There are a lot more 30-40-50 year old cars that aren't collectable than are.

It will come down to collectors really, will a "Monaro" be collectable in 30 years time? Who knows? Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Just because it is a limited run and you keep it low mileage will not automatically make it collectable.

What about the Holden Piazza? That is almost 30 years old, is that collectable?

There'll be someone out there with a stash of them hoping so.....for sure.
What makes the P76 collectable... and Edsel Fords for that matter.
