washing the engine

whats the correct/ easy way to wash the engine.
my ssv has an otr which unfortunately means the removal of the rubber front seal so dust gets all over the top covers.
as its all plastic shrouded, just to get the dust off can it be sprayed down at the car wash?

How dirty is it?

if you NEED to blast it, that's fine, just keep the lance a distance away so you're not forcing water where it doesn't need to do. And bag your OTR so it doesn't fill up with water. If the plastic cover is still on, you don't have to worry about coil packs, if it's off, they CAN be an issue (not so much with holden, but with some other makes).

If it's not THAT dirty, just lightly spray the top of it with something like HD Total HD Total (it's a concentrate, so follow the directions for dilution) and wipe it clean. No hose required, no risk. And no residue from that all purpose cleaner, unlike a lot of others. No reason to soak it if it's not required - saves any water spotting as well and takes all of 5 min.

If you want to darken up the look of the plastics, use something like HD Dress HD Dress or similar water-based dressing and you're laughing.
