Yes there is oil in the ext housing. Ext housing needs to come off to replace the seal. Sometimes the bush wears in the ext housing and can also need replacing. If removing the housing you would replace any seals pertaining to the job as you wouldn't normally reuse seals.

Remove tail shaft remove old seal with a seal puller or leaver it out with a screwdriver. Tap new seal in. Easy as. No need to remove ext housing. I did this few weeks ago. Two types or rear seal. Use the red metal one for best results. Hardest part is removing the tail shaft. Can be done in an hour.

Bugga, I was of the understanding the housing needed to come off. Wish I knew that when I replaced my tailshaft with a rebuilt one as I have a weep from my ext seal. Brisbarnz where did you buy the seal, dealer?? I might replace mine now since the job is easy enough.

If the car is level, oil may run out.
Jack the rear of the car so you don't lose oil.

Thanks for the replies so just reverse up on ramps and remove tail shaft ? And no need to drain oil or anything? Cheers
