Having some problems with my VS and don't want to take it to a mechanic as money is really tight at the moment.

Problem is, I'm getting a knock from what sounds to be around the diff area, the noise sounds like something warped smashing up against the cabin and only does under fairly harsh acceleration. Now i also have a battery warning light showing up on my dash, which goes away only when the knocks occur. I've checked the uni and looks fine, no free movement. Was also told could be a bad centre bearing.

Any other ideas on what it could be or what i should be looking at?

How are the exhaust hangers ? Exhaust pipe can knock around on the panhard rod if a hanger is broken.

+1 on the trailing arm bushes.. Jack it up and see if you have the rubber bushes there still.. No metal on metal contact should be visible. And is your car lowered by any chance ?

I'd say the centre bearing mount, get under the car and look at the rubber that holds the centre bearing and see if the bearing is sagged toward the bottom of the bracket and check if the rubber is cracked or split.

I had a similar problem like this. But mine occurred when ever going over a bump/dip etc. I had my exhaust checked. Checked everything out my self. Everything was tight. Took it to a mechanic and they said it was my shocks? (I bought a pair of shocks and lowered springs off gumtree cheap (they must of been crap being so cheap).) So i swapped the after market shocks and put back the stock ones and it was as quiet as anything. I'm not sure if you would have the same problem but it was a hard thumping sound when ever I would go over a bump etc.

Battery light will be indicating its time for new brushes/regulator on the alternator.

doesn't help with the thump but I just replaced the brushes in my alt. regulator for $3.50. The regulator itself was priced at $79.50. !0 min work to remove and replace brushes (using original springs) if you can use a soldering iron

When you find out what is causing the knocking noise, let us know because my VS also has a knocking noise in the rear, I have replaced every rubber bush under the car except for the rear lower control arm bushes (both front of rear and rear of rear).

I actually suspect that it is the rear transmission mount because if you rock it up and down by hand you can hear a knock.

Remove the bottom part of your back seat and see if there is a dent in the floor from the tail shaft trying to smash its way through.

Nah, tailshaft hasnt tried to pop in to say hello. Alternator is fine it's a brand new one only replaced it not 4 months ago, not having any problems with it, still holds full charge. Battery light only goes away when the thumps occur which to me says there's something electrical getting bashed around when it happens. Haven't managed to take a look yet been very busy lately, it's just sitting there for the time being. Main suspect at the moment is centre bearing

What do I do if my Diffs popped in to say hello? :O
I recently replaced my transmission mount, thought it might of fixed knocking noise at rear end but nope.. had it jacked up and noticed the diffs been scrubbing at one point....

Usually that means the car is too low or the bushes have been flogged out... An easy fix....

It's been lower in it's life, when it had cut springs it didn't clunk like it does now, plus it's been normal untill recently.. Must be bushes :\
actually.. might be the exhaust... only started since i fitted extractors...

Yeah thats my point.. If you lower a car in the wrong way, even the correct way you will flog out the bushes sooner or later...When the bushes are gone things tend to knock and bump against each other.
