i rang the mate and he said he was turning in to the highway and gave rev-ed it out to 4&half and it the engine stop but it didn't stall and it made a loud clicking sound then it went away.....

My guess is one of the pulley bearings has failed - remove the belt and turn each pulley by hand to find which one is stiff/rough.

cant hear anything screeching. but if it sounds like a really high pitched squeal it could be air squeezing out of a faulty gasket

If it is a pulley bearing and it fails it will eventually throw the belt and you will have no power steering and no water pump......however it may last for a few days (if that's the problem). It only takes a few minutes to check if it is a pulley and it is very cheap insurance compared to a seized engine which is the worst case scenario.

Locate the tensioner pulley - thats the one that applies tension to the belt - put a ring or socket spanner on the bolt head of the tensioner pulley and rotate ANTICLOCKWISE to take tension off the belt...remove belt but first note how it fits on the pulleys....draw a diagram. The tensioner pulley bolt has a left hand thread so you must turn it anticlockwise to rotate the tensioner.....do it slowly and gently.

what the **** .... on my computer it sounds like a knock or piston ... get a long screwdriver and with the handle to your ear touch the other end against various places on the motor and it shall act like a automotive stethoscope and find the source of the noise

Could be just the speakers on my computer but that sound combined with your description kinda sounds like your mate has spun a main bearing, though hopefully im way off otherwise I would have said its one of the bearings in a pulley.

well at least your mate is honest with you. This is what i would do

    1) pull out the spark plugs on the noisy side one by one. Look at them, look for damage and wear. If there is damage we know that there is either metal floating around your engine and that, that is the damaged chamber. If it is worn them replace the spark plug, you might just have a terrible miss

    2) Take the rocker cover off, take care not to snap the screws holding them in. While you can see the rockers rotate the engine by hand and see what valves are in which position when the sounds is made, then refer this to what we know from looking at the spark plugs to determine if its inlet or outlet valve.
If its one of the valves, you can either take your car to a mechanic, or rip the head off and take it there. Id suggest not driving it as you will be doing damage to the bottom end.

    3) If its not the valves and all are working, but the spark plugs are stuffed then change them and see what happens.

    4) Check the coolant for oil and oil for coolant. There will be a creamy residue in the oil if it has water in it.

REPORT BACK.. Ill have a think and let me know

For your sake I'm hoping it turns out simple. Re the pulleys, you say one is stiffer than the others and you'd post a pix - when they get rough the sound can travel via the serpentine belt and appear to come from somewhere else and be pretty noisy.

damn that sounds ****ed. revving it to 6grand should be ok on a ecotec. definitly not a pulley problem. sounds like it's lost a cylinder or 2. hope your mate is nice enough to hand over some folding stuff. what did the mechanic say?

the sound was comming from the drivers side rocker cover the noise turned into banging just before she died the car no power and was strugling to get to 40 ks on the way to the mechanic.

it wont start now it made a huge noise like when your let all the air out of a balloon reaaly quick,

the mechanic said the cam was snapped and the pistons were ****ed also the main bearing was gone,

im in to minds what to do with her i really dont know should i keep her and give her a heart transplant or sell her or sell her in bits what do u lads reckon.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
