Does it have a 5.7 or a 6.0?

Fairly sure the 'f' will be the security code, all the lists I've come across say the 9th digit is the security code and the 8th is the engine.

This exercise used to be easy.
I have my VINs decoded, but online searching seems to be very vague now that Holden is just another extinct GM/ Chevrolet product, and I am having difficulty replicating the info from external sources that I found years ago..

I have tracked back through the manuals VT-VZ and don't find an X in that location anywhere.

6g1yk51xf from the VY manual translates to

Oceania, Australia, Hoilden, VY, LEvel 1 BCM, 4 Door Sedan, Amnual seat belts, Engine Type X (not shown anywhere) - but F, the following digit does show as a 5.7 litre Gen III

The only reference to an X I have fond anywhere relates to the luxury level - nothing about security.

The X appears to be an erroneous digit. Take it out and the VIN makes sense.

Sorry I couldn't solve your puzzle but hopefully you can narrow it down from here,

Interesting that yours does not follow the standared either. If the manual was to be believed yours should be:
6G12X4FX4L with X being described in the manual as the check digit which may well have ben described elsewhere as a security code.

If the OP had the F and X swapped it would make sense if X is the security code/check digit. Could it simply be a transcription error?

^^^^ ...... I just looked at my VIN plate on the radiator panel, the windscreen, and rego papers to confirm the VIN.
What I am now confused about is the original source of my info.
