I think what has really happened with the proportion of V8's to V6's being up, is that there are fewer V6's being sold, if the actual number of V8's being sold is similar to years ago, but V6 sales are down, then the percentage of V8 sales is up.

I've been thinking about "deals" for the past couple of days, and trawled my memory banks for my deals over the last twenty years. The results show just how affordability of cars has improved so much.

1997: VS II Executive V6 Manual with Aircon, ABS, IRS, dual SRS, Cruise Control, new for $30,790 drive away.

2004: VY II Executive V6 Manual with all the above options as standard, new for $27,500 drive away.

2008: VE MY09 SV6 Manual, undriven demonstrator for $30,990 drive away during the GFC.

2011: VE II MY11 SV6 Manual demonstrator for $31,298 drive away.

2013: VE II MY12.5 SV6 Z Manual new with OEM Sat Nav for $32,461 drive away.

2014: VF MY14 SV6 Manual demonstrator for $26,990 drive away.

2015: VF MY14 SV6 Manual undriven demonstrator for $29,413 drive away.

    Lots of improving value there.

1997..The year I started building business, paid A$30,000 for a block of land. Last year I paid A$250,000. Cars are definitely much affordable now a day

I think while cars are more affordable, land is massively less affordable!
Cars are back to about where they were, c/f the median wage, in the mid 70's. Housing affordability is a joke by comparison. :(

I assume you are no fan of the automatic transmission. I had an 88 VN manual back in 1989, and my VXR8 is manual, otherwise my VP Exec, VS Exec, VXII Calais, VE SV6 were autos, and my VE SS is auto - I mainly got auto with the SS due to the increased towing capacity.

Edit - actually when I bought the VS (new), I was wanting a manual, but they were very hard to get and a dealer I went to, had upped the price considerably by putting on options that then made it too expensive for me. I have often thought if I did by a new Commodore (the VS was the last one I bought new) that buying a manual made a lot of sense as they were considerably less to buy, and the resale value of a manual usually seems to be more than an auto. I think this is supply and demand, with the rental companies buying them, the resale values are low due to the numbers of them on the used market. The manual on the other hand isn't bought by rentals, so relatively few available on the used market.

Yes, I paid $64K for my home in 1983. Not on the market, but I have had unsolicited approaches from people on the street offering at least $1.6M recently.

And this is why we're heading for a heartbreaking recession within the next 18 months.
Sadly people do not need cars, as there's alternative forms of transport available but we all need shelter though. Our governments have let a staple of life get out of reach of the common person and a correction will occur. As epic as it would be to cash out your property for $1.6 million I'm sure that you'll find it equally as expensive to buy anywhere else nearby so your trapped by the market unless you move or rent. Of course with unimproved land in Alice Springs going for a quarter million there's nearly no escape.

Would be a good time to "retire to the country", if that were your thing.

Maybe. Perhaps we are coming out of a golden period when buying a house was much easier that it had been in the past. When I bought my home, it was hard to buy, not necessarily just because of affordability, but also because loans were hard to get. To get a bank loan required a minimum of 20% deposit plus cash to cover purchasing costs, i.e. about another 5 - 6%. In my case, I needed over twice average weekly earnings, 25% deposit for a total of around $20,000 savings with the bank built consistently over four years to qualify for a loan, which they would only give me loan over a 15 year term. Those who tried the alternative required half the deposit saved over two years for a much dearer Building Society loan at 19% versus the bank 13.5%. There was no easy money.

The real difficulty at the moment is restricted to Sydney and Melbourne. I have seen two large three bedroom apartments right on the beach in SE QLD sell for less than $500,000 recently, dramatically less than they cost new about 20 years ago.

A key driver of prices in Sydney may have been the policy from the previous ALP government to try to force urban consolidation by seriously restricting land supply. There is certainly a deficit in desired urban land availability for new housing. At least the current NSW government has hastened and increased new land releases, and pushed for changes to rezoning of appropriate residential land to increase that availability of land for higher density homes.

I guess the thing is that car makers are always bringing out new and better cars, and the older ones are wearing out. We are not making any new land in Australia, and the land that is already there does not deteriorate with age.

If we do have a recession, the first thing that will stop is the building of houses. Sure prices might flatten for a while, but the cessation of building activity would only worsen the supply/demand dynamics. Maybe we would then have even a bigger affordability crisis. I personally hope we don’t have a recession. The problem created by recessions is that those in stable employment are able to take financial advantage through reduced competition, while those less advantaged or those who lose their jobs lose out big time. It is a fact that my living standard has been better during recessions than in booms because I have had stable income to take advantage of the “suffering” of those less well off.

Planning and Development regimes have required up front works(money) for all development in the way of infrastructure charges for the past 20 years.
This requires the developer to borrow from the BANK. These upfront costs get passed onto the lot or home buyer.
A new 400m2 block of serviced now costs 200kish ($150k more than before) because of this. The purchaser than goes and buys a bigger mortgage to cover this from the BANK. Since entry level land and house is now $350k+ out in undesirable suburbs away from the city and jobs and amenity the older homes jack up their price because of the new baseline plus position, position, position.
BANK gets rich, older home owners get rich and new home owners carry the load. Previously, a Council's rates would pay infrastructure off over 20 years but those short term politicians keep rates relatively low (only focusing on maintaining the assets) and make home buyers pay via mortgage via developer charges for infrastructure.
Add in ridiculously low interest rates + access to money + negative gearing + CGT breaks + revised superannuation rules to buy property + foreign investment illegally stashing crooked overseas money = present day housing unaffordability bubble.

P.S. sorry for the thread derail, I'm a Town Planner in a high growth Council that hates to see what we've done to ourselves (and trying to put a stop to it)

Sorry that I mentioned the house and land...That's why it doesn't what deals we get from buying a car now a day, it is a "bargain" compares to 20 years ago..better enjoy the smell of petrol and listen to the V6 & V8 rumbles, God knows another 20 years, we would be driving those "silent" electric vehicles.

Dunno if you'll have a lot of choice ... kinda suggested to the Better Half to get the V8 not only because "last of the V8 Interceptors" (last Australian car ever), but also because affordable petrol-powered performance cars are on the way out. BMW i8 is, IMHO, a glimpse of the not-that-distant future; and TBH it's not as grim as thngs appeared in future-views from days gone by such as in Demolition Man or Blade Runner.

Welcome "lobbie"..good buy on your SV6 indeed. As we were saying, VFs already are very reasonably priced, any "discounts" are bonus.

OK Hellooo world (first post) ,

    Looking to put on :
Slim Weathershields, rubber mats, boot tray protector, Hard Tonneau Cover (Twin Hump), scuff plates, some custom plates and a 2-ch dash cam into it.

So this is a whole new experience for me. I've been a Ford man through and through for many years, but I'm happy to say I just ordered a new SSV Redline.

I was considering the new XR6T, as I currently have a BA MK2 Manual, however, Ford just haven't got anything right. The styling is boring, and the interior is inferior.

    Spec of the new car as follows;
    2016 SSV Redline
    Nitrate Silver
    6 Speed Manual
    20" Black staggered wheels
    Blackout Kit
    Black Lip Spoiler

    On road for $56,217.28

    Very happy today :beer chug:
