timandhayley and Sean880 have made some excellent points above.
Ok it's time I had a little rant. Don't expect an well punctuated, logically flowing prose here folks, this is nothing more than a heart felt brain dump!
It is sad but true that the Aussie car market (buyers) have significantly contributed to the demise of manufacturing by Mitsubishi, Ford and now Holden. Yes the strong economy, high AUD, high labour and materials rates in Aus, and a number of other economic drivers have all played a big part in these closures. And before anyone makes any derogatory comments about Mitsubishi, it's not about whether or not you liked the products, it's the important part they played in the industry, the jobs and broader economic benefits they created, and the competitive forces they brought to the market that benefited everyone.
The reality is (in my mind anyway) that even in the face of all these negative economic conditions, Ford and Holden could and should have weathered the storm and gone from strength to strength. What was needed was smarter Federal Govt protection polices. And it's not just the car industry...More and more manufacturing and other value-add industry will continue to suffer without some clever (albeit simple) Govt policy. Australia is a small market in pure global terms, but we punch above our weight in what we can contribute to the global economy. Our domestic car manufacturing sector (read Holden, Ford, Mitsubishi and Toyota) needed and needs the support of the Federal Govt. Not just in terms of cash injected into their bottom lines, but tariffs on imported products. Our car market is flooded with options of imported cars ranging from high end Euro's to absolute rubbish (Mahindra, Cherry, Great Wall etc) that will in a few short years be adding to our landfills! Why should we as an island market of some 23m people have the displeasure of choosing to buy such rubbish! Why should importers such as these, and Subaru, Mazda etc not have to compete with local products on at least a level playing field? These imported vehicle manufacturers should be made to pay large import duties to add to the AUS economy, not just take our hard earned cash offshore. Can/do they make good cars? Yes, generally, but the rubbish should be weeded out completely - goodbye Cherry, Great Wall and Mahindra! Should they be sold either cheaper OR with a higher profit margin than similar locally manufactured cars? NO!!!! Have we now created a situation whereby these imported cars will continue to become more and more expensive? Absolutely!
Instead of supporting our local manufacturers, and educating them as to what we want as buyers (yes they do listen!), we've succumbed to the marketing hype afforded to the importers and believe that an SUV is a better option than a locally produced sedan or wagon. Get out of your Honda SRV and take a VF Sportwagon for a drive. If you don't agree that it is a better car to drive, safer, as or more economical than most large SUV's, quieter, better handling and the list goes on, then you are simply not being honest with yourself. I've driven a good cross section of modern SUV's an apart from sitting higher which creates the impression of safety and status, they leave a lot to be desired.
Unfortunately then this is the future of motoring in Aus. So for the smart ones out there, be sure to get yourself into a new Holden while they're still available. Cherish it and it will return you a lifetime of quality motoring.
God help us if and when the resources sector becomes less lucrative.
Time to start saving for that Aus plated Z28.

426Cuda, I loved your rant, and 100% agree, and I could also rave on about other points, and where Strayan manufacturing is going, for pages.,
But as this thread is about deals on a VF ( I'm not criticising or being a smart-arse, just an idea ) what about putting it on a new topic where we can all have a rant, lament the state of the nation, bag imported junkheaps on wheels, and get a bit of therapy about losing access to a large part of our lives.

    Thanks Figjam,

It was a therapeutic, cathartic little whinge. I am saddened by the state of the nation wrt my beloved GMH, but so be it. Alas it is too late, the #1 Aussie icon will soon be no more.
As a newbie to JC I am yet to start a new thread. Honestly I'm not even sure how? But I'll give it a go as I am sure there are many others like us who want to vent at the way things have gone.

    Cheers

BTW, I did not mean to hijack the thread, and totally get your suggestion.

    Cheers

Received the brochure for the Holden first "Sell Last Year's" stock sale.

No prices, just the bland "huge factory bonuses" promise. My understanding has been the bonus for the first previous year plate sale has generally been $1K for Commodores in the past.

Worthwhile addition is 5Yaer/130K warranty and 5 years roadside assist.

Would be interested to hear what prices are achieved this weekend.

Yes that 1k amount rings a bell with me too, roadside assist bonus is worth $400 appx..extended warranty is a bonus for sure but should be the standard anyway imo!!

Shame a previous year plated vehicles value would "drop" maybe 3 or 4 grand just for the calendar turning over on a new car.....

Might be bigger/better offers this time around so it will be interesting your right.
Demo's they knock several thousand off more in line with depreciation trends..prob a better buy and have already been run in appropriately..apparently.Better value there one would think.

The bonus being paid on VF (for the 4 day sale promotion) is Nil to the dealer. Holden is paying for the warranty. Dealers need to make it look like they are passing on a minimum $500 discount to the customer though.

The 2013 plate bonus on VF is only $500 in total..... Early build VF SV6, SS and SSV have a $1500 bonus on....

I have also noted a Demo SV6 Manual Sedan for $29,990 listed on the website of a Holden dealer.

I'm also planning to secure a VF Calias sportswagon this coming weekend. Was quoted today for a 13 build for $43900 drive away. Is it decent? How much can I knock off? Any advice is welcome, cheers

I just bought an SSV Sportwagon from Suttons for 50,500 delivered with premium paint, premium plates. They had a big 2013 clearance sale this weekend (Jan-14) and I had to negotiate pretty hard for that deal, pretty happy though as they offered a really competitive trade for my SV6 Sportwagon.

Cannot wait to get the new car :)

I am adding a VF SV6 Manual to my "stable". Car is a demo, at $26,990 drive away after my GM Card rebate.
