new water pump in- old one was rusted to hell and barely able to be turned by hand. Impeller had just started the death wobble from the looks of the block, couple of scuff marks but nothing major.

Installed the Machter pump from Ebay but cracked it. Combination of me tightening it too much and a fault in the casting I suspect.

Luckily Supercheap had a Gates one in stock, so that went in and now she's running perf. Would recommend the Gates pump every time, just felt like a much better quality unit than the Machter.

Engine is running about 100rpm lower now at idle and across the range, was sitting at 2200rpm at 100ks in 5th, now just around 2000 rpm. So it definitely isn't working as hard as before.

Also put in my KYB shocks, turns out the monroes that were in Are dead. No movement in them at all. Can pull them out but takes a fair bit of effort.

Ute sounds and feels much happier now

had a look at taking off starter cable to clean, but nothing I have gets up there. Logged on and asked advice from this site. Now awaiting for the responses from someone who found an easy way!

Glad to hear you fitted a Gates DirtyV6. Machter are not a good pump. Even GMB which were a really good pump a few years ago are not anywhere near what they used to be.

think i replied in your other thread about the SM cable. You need the drop the starter motor to get to the cable fitting.

I'd heard a few things about Machter being a bit average, but I needed to get the ute working and it was the one I could get easiest/cheapest. Right now I'm just grateful for 2 things
1. Supercheap had a Gates when I broke the Machter
2. That the Machter broke whilst being installed and not while driving. Having a piece of water pump break off at 100ks is not my idea of fun

I bought a GMB for under 40 bucks but it replaced another GMB that was less than 12 months old. Hence i think GMB have gone down the toilet.

Depends on what was the cause of the failure of the first GMB pump, contamination in the cooling system is enough to destroy the seal and cause a pump failure unfortunately.

Yeah hard to know. I bought the ute with a six month old GMB and six months of new ownership it started leaking. Fine now though 8 or more months on and the new GMB seems fine.
