shining a light on a cap is not going to do anything.
who ever told you/showed you that is either pulling your leg, or they themselves are in need of more education on the subject
using the globe in series with the cap, limits current flow as at the start, the cap is seen as a short circuit by the battery.....

one of my mates has and amp with 2 subs but the amp doesnt have a LPF. What bipolar cap would you reccommend i use to filter out high frequencies? would i have to wire them/it in parrallel? btw, both subs are im ported enclosures and are wired together in series with an 8ohm load total.

You will be wasting alot of power doing that... You are better off low passing the RCA's rather than the speaker output. Jaycar sell a box which goes in line with the RCA's that has a low pass filter in it. Might be a bit more expensive than a simple component but it will be done properly then and the filter will have a steeper cutoff. If you run the signal through the device twice (as it has left and right yet sub audio is usually mono) you can get double the cutoff (24dB/octave rather then 12dB/octave).

Also, a capacitor is a high pass filter, an inductor is a low pass filter.

The page below tells you how to work out what value component/s you would need.

i will have a look into those rca crossovers but i was also reading about high passing the front coaxils with 220uF caps. now iv had a look on the DSE web site and they come in different Working Voltage Ratings (WV)... which ones should i get?

sorry to be a P.I.T.A, but it wouldnt make a difference if i used a 63WV Cap instead of a 50WV or 35WV Cap and vice versa?

thanx for the quick replys

the issue is when you EXCEED those voltages. they are fine upto that voltage. The ones used in car audio power applications are generally rated 16-20Volts.

the formula for working out the maximum voltage you will reach is...

Volts = the square root of watts multiplied times ohms.

e.g a four ohm speaker powered by a 50watt amplifer will need a capacitor that can handle 15Volts. Now of course you don't need a 100wv capacitor, so a 35wv cap would suit but a 10wv wouldn't.

WV can be viewed like a RMS rating on amplifiers. Although generally is not wise to exceed the WV what so ever.
