I have been on the lookout for a 5L V8 engine so i can finally get into changing the engine out of my V6 VS and repowering it with a V8.

I have found a nice cheap engine on TradeMe (NZ's Ebay) for $900 and it has the following details:

The car that it came out of had a hit in the front, but the seller said that it wasn't hard, and didn't damage the radiator, only the fan on the engine (as you can see in the pics)

The plan is to strip back the engine and rebuild it with a few basic modifications (haven't fully decided yet, but need an engine first)

What do you guys think? Worth the risk of a front hit? Seller says no cracks and all pulleys are working fine.

Mate if your going to strip it back anyway I don't think you can go wrong, it's been chipped you said, does this mean u will get the ecu and chip with? Sounds pretty good to me

cheaper to rebuild a 5lt than a v6 so if you strip and rebuild you can't really go wrong for that price if it's not damaged.

Thats what it says in the original post in the blue quote box.....

It looks OK, but without checking it properly it's always a risk.

thanks for the input so far guys.

With checking this engine out (will probably get a mate who is closer to look for me) what stuff should i get him to check for me?

Cracks around the water pump is something i know can occur after a front impact. Anything else i can get him to check?

Check the water pump shaft, see if it moves in and out. Pull the dipstick to see if there is water in the oil.

How long has it been out of the car?

I would be pulling the waterpump off and looking how hard the hit was.
I have seen front hits that hard that have moved the cam backwards and popped the plug behind the cam and damaged the pump on the front of the auto gearbox.

Thanks again for the input guys.

My mate has had a chance to look at it for me and it appears sound. No movement in the pump pully, no obvious cracks or other damage (apart from the leads, but i'm going to replace them anyway)

VR38, that must have been some hit to that much damage! The gearbox was a-ok though so i dont think this hit was that hard.

All sorted, picking up on Saturday. For $900 i think it is a good deal, very genuine guy selling it.
