It all depends, those three probably weren't worth pissing on if they were on fire in the first place, so this was a perfect chance to get rid of them. Where I work, I have to do pay rise and bonus pay (or redundancy) recommendations based on performance. I don't look at their sick days or annual leave days, but rather at their performance in their role. If they are struggling to achieve certain goals, the recommendation reflects this. I believe if the work is getting done, and done well, employees are entitled to certain leeway
Actually, 2 of them were excellent workers, i just hate liars, hence why i sacked them. A liar is about as useless as tits on a bull. No leeway is given to people who blatantly lie to me. had they simply asked for a day off, i would have granted it.
my boss said if there is a recurrance of sick days with 'fake' excuses he is gunna make personal home visits or make them bring a doctors cert. i personally think this is a good idea. i hate slackers who take sickys.
I agree with minux hate people who lie and too scared to ask for a day off. My dad fired two employees last year in similar situations. So good advice is don't mess with your boss, they are not always dumb as they seem!!!!
IM not sure exactly where you work...but in the real world, there are things called systems and command trees. The degree of formalisation. for example. A chashier is not able to make a decision on what to order. Just like a grocier is unable to fire anyone from finance. I doesn't matter how multi skilled a worker may be, unless they have been trained in the workplace systems that are in place, they CANNOT do the job. he broke his finger, he cannot furfill his working requirements. The manager has also assessed the situation and deemed him unfit to work and also met the requirements to not an injured worker possible injur themselves further. I think the harrassement from the employer is unjustified as hes/shes basing the situation off another clerk who also uses myspace, that shows the level of integrity of the informant. Chinease wispers really does happen... In a situation such as a super market, there are no offices to work in, there are no floors that can be swept as these jobs have already been allocated to other trained staff. Should the employer find jobs that he could complete then it is a differnet scenario however they are still required to ask whether he is fit for the job and a doctors certificate will prove wether he is or not. Personally? i wouldn't come into work. Why? because i canot complete my job as well as someone else could as i am injured. If my employer was happy to have me in to do other duties then fine, sure i would come in, however, givning my shifts to a capable employee to bennifit the company, reduce costs and increase profit has always been my idea of a good worker. As for sick days: I have a zero tolerence policy to fakers also, you can work, your rostered to work, you come to work. You need a day off, you request it, people need breaks, i respect that, however, take it when it suites the business, not the employee. Ive had employees come in with hangovers on the busy est days of the year and i have had people not come in because "oh i forgot to look at the roster, get over it". Needlesss to say, they no longer have jobs. I have alot of respect for all other mangers out there, its a hard job to manage senceless tools. As forthe using the computer while sick though.... to get better, i relax, i relax by not doing too much, ie. browsing JC, watching TV.,...etc. etc... it doesnt constitue cominging into work though. Thats like saying... "i saw tony in the toilet at home on his sick day!! he can piss, he can operate a 6tonne fork lift" (tony has BirdFlu).... aZk.
oh look out i posted this whole comment using one hand it isnt hard and as for a doc cert u can get them for just showing up and saying id like a general check over go out and do wat eva u got a doc cert so u cant get in trouble but y is everybody saying its like chucking a siki anyway he has a BROKEN finger there isnt much u can use that whole hand for and if ur sik r u going to spend ALL day in bed and its not as if he is out partien or anything instead of work he is just at home resting ( id say resting can include using ur good hand and be on the pc) anyway wat happened if he was at work and was performing so called light duties and hurts the finger again well he is back to square 1 wif a broken finger again sum things just take time to heal u cant rush sum things footy players have physios working on there injuries every day trying to get them back on the field im sure most ppl dont have that kind of money to throw around on physio
Your saying insurance companies dont have that money to throw around? Workcover covers ALL OF THIS, people just abuse the workcover system. I agree with the most of what you say, however, there is no reason at all that companies should NOT allow someone to do data entry even if it is someone else's job. You think the Australian Army gets its good name in infantry because we are like Americans who train soldiers in one specialty and thats it? I think not, every Australian infantrymen can assume command of a section if needed. Most companies take this approach also, i know wherever i have managed i have also made sure it happens, i have also made sure that anyone with an injury can do some sort of duty whether it is someone else's or not.
lol i thought he worked ina super market? no where else just a super market? am i wrong there or am i missing somthing? i dont think u can compare other jobs 2 that as other ppl have said u have ur own set work 2 do the other duties r already covered if u double up then those ppl r not gonna have as much work 2 do and then wat ur gonna fire them 4 bein slack coz theres not enough work 2 go round? i rekon go back 2 work man if u hurt ur finger again claim it on compo and then ur boss cant say **** or nagg u 2 come in 2 work would b great ud get a month off work and u can use ur PC all day long but seriously if ur employer thinks u can work on the register still and u hurt it its his own fault and he looses out and u have 2 have time off its as simple as that really
Actually he would simply be sent home with no pay, the only time he can claim workers comp is if the ORIGINAL injury occurs at work. A Contracting company I worked for did pre employment medicals and any pre existing conditons were not covered by our insurance/work cover.
Minux, I agree with alot that you say, but the whole if your sick you should be at home being sick, not surfing the internet - Don't really agree with that. If your sick your at home, yes. But your at home to relax, bed rest - water, tv, movies combined with more sleep, more water. I don't see any problem with being on a computer to kill the time. As long as your not shopping or out and about around town etc.
I agree. Last few days I've been sick, and can't stand up more than 30 seconds without getting dizzy, and can't even talk properly. Hasn't stopped me using a computer occasionally. Does this mean I'm well enough to work?
Well considering I can type with one hand, but can't work efficiently with cash registers, and putting stuff in bags. I can't really blame you for not working. But has the boss given you a choice of other activities to do? Have you asked him can you do anything else? If not, then he is being hard on you.
I too agee with everything azkwazere says. To work on the register requires 2 functional set of hands, 1 hand is used to grab and scan the item, then pass it to the opposite hand who then packs the bag. Really, most jobs in the supermaket require 2 hands: I know that there is no way in hell I could strip and pack away a pallet full of licquor. Unfortunatly minux, he simply cant just get moved to another spot to work, like answering the phones. All the jobs in the supermarket already have somebody assigned to do them. Plus it aint worth the managers time, especially since he works on the frontend (Frontend has the highest number of staff members in all of the departments), much easier to just call somebody in to fill his shift. Just my 2c worth.
thats true but if u go into work just 2 get sent home again wats the point of goin in the 1st place? i agree with both ppls sides of the stories but in that perticular job it doesnt apply its just how it works like saber just said it b easier just 2 get some1 2 fill his spot
Hmmm.... I can't believe i'm going to type this but here goes.... Having had a partial tear of one of the ligaments in my knee (inner one - can't remember the name) it is an extremely painful injury. It was on par with a broken arm (before it goes into plaster). I do have issue with 14 months off work though. Walking un-aided just didn't happen for over 6 weeks and was still very painful for the first 6-7 months but didn't stop a virtually normal lifestyle (even if it was somewhat slower). For the next year after that walking or cycling etc was fine but even the slightest twisting of my knee bought a very sharp pain. This also happened if my leg was in 1 place for more than an hour or so (ie driving interstate). The first few steps were agony but it came good after a few minutes. All in all it took nearly 2 years to be completely healed with no pain. You can't equate it to a footballers injury as they are packed in cotton wool from the moment the injury happens and have the best round-the-clock physio that money can buy. For mere mortals like the rest of us, this doesn't happen and similar injuries take many times longer to heal. IMHO up to 3 months off work for a similar injury could be argued - maybe even 6 if you are a poof but 14 months is just ridiculous. It will be costing the fool because IIRC work cover payments drop dramatically after 26 weeks and are totally removed after 52. This may vary from state to state though. Reaper
The level of care is way different. It is not just a matter of money either. Nearly always the footballer is operated on before any swelling occurs. This rarely happens for the rest of us because of shear practicalities of life. Beyond my injury, a close friend had a much worse version and had to wait for nearly 6 weeks to be operated on as one of the ligaments had to start healing first naturally (and the swelling had to go down) before they would operate. It does depend somewhat on your industry and size of company. The principals are good - usually there is something. That said, if the person is dragging their heals and playing things to be worse than they really are, I usually prefer for them not to be at work (bad for morale for others) and just move them on at the first opportunity I can find. exactly the prob is that his boss is giving him greif to return to work, so i reckon (as ive said b4) Tell the employer that you can return to work on light duties, if there isnt any that he can give you (which there doesnt seem to be) inform him you cannot return to work until it heals, get a doctors cert. to cover ur arse if he decides to fire you. simple n the correct way to address the problem from both points of view
