This is the last 6 digits of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) located on the passenger side windscreen at the very bottom. It's the shiny engraved piece of metal.

This hasn't been covered in a while so here's a quick explaination to how the VIN system works, keeping in mind I know this is accurate for up to VS, after that I am not sure.

For example mine is 6H8VNK19HKL365xxx

6H8 - This tells us it was made by Holden
VN - This is the model ie VP, VR, VS etc etc
K - Luxury Level, K = Executive, L = Berlina, X = Calais, Y = Statesman, Z = Caprice
19 - Type of body, 19 = Sedan, 35 = Wagon, 80 = Ute
H - Type of Engine, H = 3.8L V6, U = 5L V8
K - Year of production, K = 1989, L = 1990, M = 1991 and so forth
L - Where the car was made, L = SA
xxxxxx - Serial Number of the car, this you can assume is the build number.

This information originally came from Neale over at Unofficial Holden Commodore Archive.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Darren

Some things need clarifying here too.

The model year runs from sept 1 of the previous year to Aug 31 of the current year.

Thus a 1989 model is built between 1/9/88 and 31/8/89.

The model year for '88 is H if it's a VL, and J if it's a VN. Only 7/88 & 8/88 build VNs had J, from 01/09/88 the model year changed to K.

The serial number sequence didn't start at 0 though, it was up to something like 286,000-290,000 or so when the VN started production (prior sequential numbers were issued to VLs built at Elizabeth) and ANY car produced in that plant gets the next sequential number, regardless of what model/trim/body style it is.

There is no way at all of knowing just how many cars were built before yours unless you know the earliest build #.

The sequential numbers continuesd until 999,999 which occurred sometime in late '96 or '97, and then went back to 000,001

Basically if your VIN is (for example) ending in 327,564 then it is reasonable to assume your car is roughly the 37,000 - 40,000th VN commodore built, based on early VN VINs having a sequence number in the high 280,000 region.

Bloody interesting Mixin ;) I wonder where the serials are at with the VZ, it'd have to be back up to 600-700,000.

Anyone with a VZ or access to one want to find out?
