Mate how are you finding the Castrol Formula R 10W 60 oil? I wanted to get it last oil change but it says on the bottle that used for high perfomance/compression engines and mines a stock ecotec so I just went with the Castrol Magnetec. Alot of people recoomend the Formula R oil for ecotecs? Is it good?

It's still in the bottle atm... I will let you know when its been running in for a while....

This Formula R is old stock as now its all Formula Edge being stocked on the shelves...

And if anyones in Adelaide... Sprint Autos have very cheap oils... I saved $14 on gear oil and $10 on engine oil today... Mobil1 5W-50 was $58 I think...:w00t:

Just run the Mobil HP 20w/50 in mine, and I change it every 5000kms, have never had any problems with noise, and engine burns no oil at all. Also use genuine GMH oil filters too, they are pretty much the same price as the aftermarket ryco etc ones.

I run Valvoline XLD PLus and use a Repco branded oil filter on my commie. I do change the oil every 5000klm and the filter every 10,000klm as recommended in the handbook. Never a problem! :hit:

I'm running Valvoline XLD Premium, but will probably upgrade to synthetic or semi-synthetic next change. Either Mobil 1 15W-50 or Penrite HPR15 (15W-60). Any suggestions?

Mobil1 10w/30 in a 96 super6 calais. The engine is only 100,000k's old. No engine noise at all. Have had it for 3 weeks now and still hasn't burned any oil. It's expensive stuff though at $79.95 for 5 litres. Before I got it it was using Valvoline lo vis 10w/30. Now that I've gone fully synthetic I'll never go back.

just change my oil on w/e to valvoline 10w-50(wanted the castrol edge 10W but it was 20buks extra, didnt have enuf money with me,lol) and ill tell u synthetic is excellent i def aint goin back to normal oil , the car now starts up and is drivable straighaway, before it would cough and splutter a bit, also its become more responsive, i highly reccommend synthetic oil, it may cost more but it is well worth it, also i change the oil filter every oil change, i dnt understand why ppl would leave an old one in there with new oil, as it would just contaminate the new oil(some1 in a previous post said they change oil every5000 and filter every 10000)

I use ryco filters, and oil brand changes every time I change the oil. does that make sense? can't remember what oil has been in there, (whatever holden service and ultra tune use) and currently has mobil synth S.
oil and filters changed every 5000 by me, and full service in a workshop every 10000

GM dealers generally use Mobil S and genuine filters, Mobil S is a semi synthetic oil that's good stuff for low mileage engines.

    Ryco filters are OK.

Once 250K pops up a thicker oil should be used, the Nulon 15 / 50 full synthetic is very good gear, aussie made and about $40 / 5 lit, the quick starting cold and extra power from roughly 32% - 36% less friction can be felt at your right foot, quite literally.

    Oils

    Hey guys,

Just wondering why some of the post herre state they use oils around the rating 50 mark?

My engine has just gone over 100,00ks and is in very good nick and i found that using oil such as magnatec 10w-40 was fine and that I can use castrol 5w-30 as well with no oil burning happening at all? usually i thought real think oils were for cars that have worn out piston rings? although i have heard the in summer you use slightly thicker oil because of the heat?

My mate used hpr 60 in his RX7 (yes i know its a rotory) and it lost power as the oil thickness took power away as the moter had to turn it around.

Anyways please coorrect me if im wrong!

I have used Castrol GTX since dare I say in my brand new TX 1976 Coupe Gemini (arghhhh it's been that long !) and now use GTX3 in my 5 litre. After all of these years I can't complain as it's been a good oil for me. Filter wise I have used Ryco for the majority of the time and AC Delco in the earlier years.
