Everyone has an opinion with engine oil and if you use the search engine here you'll see. I've been using Penrite oil for years & never had a problem. I have used other manufacturers oils but I find Penrite very smooth on the engine. Best to buy when they are on special.

Is this a v6 or v8?
If its a 6 you MUST run 5-30 (lot of evidence running thicker oil brings on the timing chain issues)

If it's a 6, I would follow the books and use 5-30 or 10-30 if it mentions that as an alternative.

Can't imagine why 20- 50 . It's not a 1980's Subaru with over 400xxx on it.

If the previous owner used 20-50 id be wondering why.

Has he tried to slow down a leaky engine or an engine that is burning oil with thicker grade? Personally, if he told me that id be running for the hills.

Alloytecs need good synthetic oil and regular changes. Chances are, if the previous owner has been chucking 20-50 Mangtec oil in it, its going to be a ####ing sludgefarm in there.

Owners book recommends a 5-30 IIRC. Id be looking at a good quality synthetic, 5W30 like HPR5 or even a HPR10 10W50 if its a little noisy. Do a couple of really good flushes/quick oil changes and dont touch Valvoline with a 10 foot pole.
