Its not the HP that kills these things its the torque. The 3rd/4th clutches in these things are a joke. They were built/designed for a daily driver and should stay that way for anything approaching decent hp.
Previously my car was cammed...decent cam etc...just over 400 rwhp....cant remember the torque numbers but I could plant my foot and the trans never had an issue. Was built with torque converter, shift kit, trans cooler, carbon clutches etc.. I added some torque and these things clutches just rip apart. If your torque is getting around 450nm or beyond then I'd expect your going to be expecting issues under a heavy foot.
Basically, and its only my personal opinion....if your around 400hp in an ls1 then a built 4l60e should last you a while....pushing that and you'll likely have a reduced longevity by a long shot.
I'm at about 900nm with the supercharger on the Craigs built 4l60e
So far so good, fingers crossed, roll the dice....... and all that jazz
Edit: IIRC Craigs said the transmission should be fine as long as it isn't reving to high, bouncing of the limiter, getting punched in the face with the standard traction control, the hard opening and closing of the throttle puts big shock loads thru the transmission, it is tuned correctly to suit the power, and, I keep the temps under control
They did say that if alot of drag racing or big power skids were in my future that I should plan for a T400
