VS Acclaim 3.8
Just got my hands on a VS 1995 Acclaim. Its on duel fuel, done about 230000.
I would like advice on what to do for engine uprgades. I'm looking at exhaust systems and chips but just getting lost with all the biased opinions.
Please Help.
What kinda things can be done?
Thanks

One of the main things to remember is that, say for example you get an exhaust then the full potential of it wont be put to use until you upgrade your intake side ie. filter/throttle body, this works the other way to.
In my opinion start out small with exhaust and headers, then filter and CAI. decide early if your going for forced induction or not.
Ignition leads and coils can be a good mod, as can irridium tip spark plugs. From there it goes into more internal mods, options arre endless from cam+chip packages to full rebuilds.

2.5cat back is a nice start for some higher end flow, extracters also help stop it from that "piston pumpiong vibration" when giving it.

some have mixed feelings about replacing the air filter but a CAI add that little touch.

getting the transmission either overhaued or shift kitted will help the car with pickup

if your going for a chip, get it dyno tuned so that it's tailored to your car, also as above a bigger TB will get it breathing.

you could get roller rockers and a stroker kit for more hp that way.

hmmm what else... maybe under drive the power steering and water pumps.

VS Power Upgrade

Yes, decisions decisions. I would have thought if I took it to an exhaust specialist they would do the air intake as part of the whole system upgrade.

Does anyone know of any good places around Melbourne who specialise in V6 upgrade, I kinda wanna just take it somewhere and say 'pimp my ride' then pay the money and get it all done. Biggest problem is where to go and what to have done. Maybe I should trade in the existing engine for a whole new one already moded, after all the one in it has done 230000.

Any Ideas? Anyone still drive a VS and live in Melbourne?:)

The words 2.5cat back mean nothing to me mate, I'm new, I came on here for help. I am willing to learn but if everyone just lists off a whole lot of fancy words without explaining what they are or what they do then theres no real point in me asking, true?
Underdrive the power steering......huh??
Sorry if I sound like a smart arse but its just so frustrating trying to get help.
Its a VS Acclaim Wagon
on LPG & Unleaded if that helps.
A throttle body doesnt get used at all on gas does it? I dunno....

:bang: Thanks anyway people.
Maybe i'll just stick to upgrading the sound system.
I'll post pics when I start it.

Having been in your position when I started on this site I can only advise to read alot. There is a section on v6 performance that is an interesting read. The more research you do the more value for money you will get when buying parts. Power is a question of money, how much you want to spend will depend on how fast you want to go. With 230,000k's on the clock I would look at doing a rebuild on the engine (replacing gaskets etc really freshen up the engine costs a lot though) or doing a swap you can get the supercharged engine from a VS calais and gearbox and drop that straight in. Work out what your budget is and then we can give you an idea. Good place to start is go to holden and get a S/C Cold air intake. Do a seach on the forum there is an install guide. If you get all the parts from holden it's $100 including the bottom of the air box. K&N panel air filter is a must have. $110 and a 1.6Million k warranty can't go wrong. Then if your budget is tight get extractors and a decent exhaust system. If this is where you want to stop then see Doctor bob on the forum and get your chip "reflashed". Will help you get that the last little bit extra.

Most importantly do your research.

Don't worry mate you will get used to the terminology we use on this forum.

2.5catback = 2.5 inch (diameter) Exhaust from the Cataylac converter down.

As mentioned by Spaced, go through the site and you'll pick up things as you read.

my bad, one gets kind of used to the terms.

and in all honesty "Underdriving" is most seen on off roaders.

the idea is you fit a larger pulley to acceseries ( water and power steering pumps ) and this makes it eaiser for the motor to spin them, so in effect you dont loose power though those devices ( 1-5HP max? )

the downside with doing that is 1) doesnt spin as fast
2) dont know if they make fanbelts to suit ( or in a commodore's case "Serpentine belt"

and a throttle body does get used, it controls how much air you are letting into the engine, so a larger one reduces pressure of the incoming air, removing a bottleneck of sorts, basicly its a flow thing, flow is good. ^_^

Good luck with your findings.
