Fitting higher diff gears will kill the acceleration, but will drop the engine revs slighly out on the highway at 100 km/h .. Most people fit slightly lower diff gears for better acceleration..

I think you've got it backwards there mate. Higher gears for example going from 3.07:1 to 3.46:1 will increase acceleration and will make it rev a little higher at 100. going with lower diff gears sacrifices acceleration but brings the revs down

I'm thinking of going 3.46:1 gears in LSD. Will a centre out of a VL diff fit in my IRS housing? cos that would be awesome cos I just happen to have a VL LSD diff from my calais.

Wont fit. Live Axle diffs are very different to IRS.

Jack the car up, get under it and have a look to see what you're getting into.

People say "higher" when in fact they mean "taller". A higher ratio, EG the numbers are bigger, mean shorter gears, or better acceleration. Lower ratio, EG the numbers are smaller, mean taller gears, or better top end.

Tomato tomarto, we all know what Brett means.

Its not backwards at all. A diff with a 3.08:1 ratio, is higher(taller) than a diff ratio thats 3.46:1 . The higher this number is, the lower the gear ratio will be..A lot of young blokes always seem to get this ass about face.
Take the gear cluster on a 10 speed bike for instance. The smallest sprocket (which has the least number of teeth) is a higher or taller gear than the largest sprocket (that has the most teeth). So the higher the number( of teeth), the lower the gear ratio, same as a diff.

3.08 parts to 1 vs 3.46 parts to 1... ratio seems higher to me, That's how I like to say it, and that's how most people understand it.

I stand by my original post.

Ive never heard many people say it like that except for a few young blokes who dont seem to know any better. Thats why I posted up and said something so the guy doesnt end up with higher diff gears instead of lower.. Even car magazines like street machine word it like, "this guy has removed the standard 3.08 diff gears and has fitted lower ratio 4.11 diff gears" Ive got heaps of car books here that all say it the same way I do, and the diff specialists Ive dealt with over the years also say it the same way as I do, and I think theyd know if anyone knows.. Just because the number is higher does not mean the gearing is higher, it means the opposite.

It's true. Just like lower ratio gearboxes and all. I just say shorter to save confusion.

Don't get 3.45's they suck and you'll be dissapainted. Atleast get 3.7's. I've got 3.7's in my vp and sometimes wish I had 3.9's. And I've got 3.9's in my ss and wish I had 4.11's haha! M78 LSD centres are good too. Better than m80 anyway. There's a couple of online diff stores that sell tight centres for about 250 - $300 if you want to source One yourself. Has to be IRS though. Live axle centre won't go in.

Tch tch tch.

Any BW78 differential centre will fit into the BW78 IRS differential housing.

Not a hard job to change centres. Just need to know what you are doing.
