I guees its a matter of different strokes for different folks.
Over here we have quiet a few guys using blocks like the old 173 0r 186 style blocks as the seem to handle bit more punnishment.
But simply as getting a machine shop to plug and tap your water jackets to suit will sort it out and get your old red block breathing ( a Black and EFI VK black head are the same.).
But the 12 port on a red block can make a awsom motor as specaily the 186 (factory steel crank ) And changing to a electronic ignition and good 2brl carb with good exauste and small cam with good lift will see your little red singing like a bird. Good luck hope this helps.

Hello mate. Yep you are right. The older the block the better. If you can find an HP block (from an EH) they are the strongest. Get it bored 60thou. Then have it decked, resin filled and run a stroker kit....202 crank etc.
Nothing will work better than a serious "head-job" Most of the expensive work is in the labour of porting, but for a small outlay, buy a die-grinder and do it yourself! Should take at least 3 days to do it right. Larger valves, go the roller rockers for strength, and heavy springs, top quality retainers.
Try to get a 12 port head to start with, then shave it to desired compression ratio specs. Ask an expert here. Be prepared to pay for high octane fuel, and lots of it!
PS If you can track down a "Phil Irving" alloy head.....just buy it!! May cost you around $7000 though.
If you are only doing road work , go for a 350 Holly or a Weber from a !#f o r d ^/??....for real fast track days can't beat the triple webers.
