I had the same choice when i looked for my first car. I decided on the VS its a bit newer and IMO drives a bit better. I got mine for $4800 its a 95 acclaim and only had 107 thousand K's on the clock.

Thats what i would go with as well, for the fact that its a bit newer, but all depends on the individual condition on each car. $4800 seems pretty good

The are heaps of differences.
1- Rear vision mirror is attached to roof in stead of windscreen.
2- Front passenger door handle has a key lock.
3- There is a key to switch off the security system. The lock is located on the panel near the ecu, you'll see it when you open the door.
4- The remote has dual stage unlock on VS the VR has one button.
5- Door trims have a two tone look on the VS the VR two tone stops at the air vent and does'nt continue on the door trim.
6- The door handles and locks on the interior are black on the VR the VS has the same colour as door trim.
7- The electric mirror switch is different. The VR has a squarish knob the VS is rounded.
8- Motor and trans
9- Badges.
10- Series 1 VR didn't have speedalert. Available on series 2 onwards
11- Different steering wheel on the VR compared to VS.

Thats all i can think of for now. Just a few things to tell them apart from each other.

not very notable difference, but VT/VX, you can tell straight away. The general public really cant tell straight away between a VR/VS. I have seen VR's with VS trims, etc. But I can tell from the noise of the engine which gives it away.
