im a bit annoyed at wollongong automotive services if its not lifters.

they said i need to spend 3500 minimum to fix the noise.

they had one bloke rev the engine while another listened down at the passenger wheel for the noise

Both hot and cold. Yes ticking increased with revs but could only be heard outside of the car when stationary. I am far from a mech, but my problem was compression loss around the plug which which somehow made the additional ticking noise. It was explained to me in detail but I missed the technicalities.
Good luck, I hope it's that simple for you....

I strongly doubt it is the lifters failing, making a noise yes. But that's fricken normal, and symptoms easily remedied with 10w40 10 Tenths.
Here's the rub: switch oil for ~$120 and if it's still there afterward I'll slip you four bottles of premium wine when I'm next in the Gong. Else you shout lunch.

banjo that sounds like what im experiencing. you can't hear anything at all while driving it.

just when i pull up in a drive thru or park the car with windows down, or like i've been doing, stand outside the car while idling listening for every little noise and fart it makes.

monstar i will try your oil change idea after i check Banjos sparkplugs and get my exhaust pressure tested as i've heard exhaust manifold leaks can make a tick sound as well.

and i'll go a case of premium beer not wine thanks haha

These engines are not quiet! And if a lifter starts to go, you will hear it!
Just make sure you use a decent quality oil.

Penrite gets mentioned a lot, they produce quality lubricants.

did you watch the videos? do you think it sounds like lifter noise?

its a very consistent tick tick tick or tap tap tap in time with the engine

Yes I watched and listened to the videos, sounds pretty normal to me.
Sounds similar to my L77 with 67k on it.
If a lifter fails, or wipe a lobe of the cam, you will definitely hear it!

A leak in the exhaust manifold can sound like a tick. That was one of the issues with mine. New set of cometics shut a lot of it up.
