It does affect reception quite a bit mate. I bought a bee sting for the wagon and tried it out for a while. It's perfectly fine in good reception areas, but unfortunately noticeably worse in marginal reception areas.

You've put your location as "Australia" so cant give you localised advice, but you'll struggle for reliable FM signal in outer metro areas of most cities.
    And highway/country road use? Crap.

For instance travelling from Canberra to Sydney, I'll get less dead spots in radio signals using the stock aerial over the bee sting.

I bought a bee sting aerial...radio reception was crap in my area, i lost all radio reception and needed to drive a few mins from home til i got fully reception (as good as standard)
I bought a Mazdz CX7 aerial after reading about it here, works great, twice as long as bee sting, half as long as standard.
    10cm Black Stubby BEE Sting CAR Antenna Aerial 4 Mazda 2 3 6 CX 7 MPS SP23 SP25 | eBay

(Then I went and bought a VG Shark Fin aerial, which also works well, but the US based company no longer seems to exist...)

Do you listen to the radio much?
Most threads i've read on here people who put them on don't listen to radio much so aren't too fussed

Same. I travel long distance quite a bit, never had a problem with that one or interference with GPS.

I've been using the walkinshaw antenna - works well in metro areas and is possibly the smallest one you can get! Jhp do an identicle antenna too - shouldn't set you back more than $30 posted

I think Bee stings belong on bees.
Go and get a 1999-2000 model corolla antenna and cut it to size. It has same thread as the VE, probably most jap car antennas will fit
It is a thin flexi solid fibreglass rod with a copper wire running up it, I also used one of my RC car antenna caps to top it off where I cut it.
Better reception than the original, which is not hard, lol
