I've only used the paper gasket in the past, with no issues

Not sure about Eco, but on Buicks you need sealant on the gasket or they weep. You could probably buy a new thermo housing as they do warp over time, which causes them to weep but at around $100, its a lot when a smear of sealant on both sides of the gasket is far cheaper.

They're all the same thing, brown gooy stuff.
I think permatex invented it.

I have used the Permatex Form a Gasket for years, I use it on most cooling gaskets and fittings.
and ALWAYS use it on the cooling hoses, make sure the inside of the hose is clean and dry,
then just run a thin film inside the hoses,
Helps them slide on the fitting/s, and also makes a perfect seal to the fittings so they wont leak.

Formally known as "Gasket Cement" in the 70's/80's/90's
stinks like ___t, [ only joking ] :D
and sticks like ___t [ not joking ] ;)

I have used Loctite No 3 years ago [very similar to Form a Gasket], as wasn't able to get hold of Gasket Cement at the time.

I have always used Gasket Cement/Form a Gasket on thermostat gaskets, never had one fail yet,
but check the surfaces of the thermostat housing and outlet,
If need be, clean them up with light sand paper so you have nice clean surfaces to re-assemble.
