The time has come to replace the struts in my MY14 Redline. The suspension has settled quite a lot since new. I don't mind that. But, the rear has a lot of body roll these days. It still handles well. But the rear rolls around, and lurches to the outside when pushed, even a little. It's nothing like it was when new and is like driving a boat compared to my Motorsport, even when in touring mode.
I haven't had it looked at by a suspension shop. I discussed it with Pedders and of course they just suggested their springs and shocks (whatever they are?). I'd rather get better gear though. My theory is it's the shocks though. I'd rather leave the stock FE3 springs. But, if those with experience suggest I should replace those too, then so be it.
I want the ride and handling and ride height to be as close as possible to stock.
I definately do not want to go down the coil over route.
So, VF suspension gurus what should I replace them with? What have others used and how do they compare to stock FE3?
Brand, model and approximate cost would be much appreciated if know too.
    Thanks in advance all.

If I was you I would keep stock springs and put new KYB shocks. Reasonably priced and good quality.

Why not replace with OEM struts/shocks which will give you the ride and handling characteristics you desire ?

It's a good suggestion.. TBH I thought they'd be too exe and I'd get better quality after market for my money. I'll price them up today though.

Years ago I bought FE2 shocks and struts pull offs basically brand-new of eBay for $50 delivered. Lots of people remove std stuff for aftermarket so you might get a bargain.

I agree if you like the handling etc before just go same gear.

What car do you have mate? Are they the same as the OEM ones, which are stamped GM Monroe?
    How much?
I tried to price these at my local dealer yesterday. But then service centre was closed.
    Cheers

My 2013 redline sedan, 145000 km.
Went King SL with Monroe gas. Amassing difference in body roll. But, SL should be 380mm rear and 375mm front. But ended up with r 355 and f 365 after 2 weeks. 2/3 full tank and empty car. Too low in rear. Told it is because of Bush sag. Have new front strut mounts.
Anyone know which bushes cause such a difference, r 25mm drop?
I'm planning to change rear springs, so +15mm but could be better to change a set of bushes.

The primary job of a bush is to allow some compliance so as to reduce ride harshness and noise especially when thumping potholes for example.

Changing ride height can alter a bushes operating position which may put more strain on them thus having the effect of shortening their useful life. Whether the bolt going through the bush can be loosened, while the cars weight on it's wheels, before again tightening those bolts and whether this resolves strain issues depends on the suspension design. Some say that such bush tension removal or realign helps. If such can be done, it'd save the bushes from clapping out prematurely. If it can't be done because of the suspension design then your at the mercy of fashion over form and will have more frequent bush replacement requirements.

About the only bush i can think of that really has any bearing on the ride height itself is the isolation bushes that sit on either end of the spring (in a macpherson strut arrangement for example). Very stiff springs will pound them ferociously and chew them out rather quickly. In such cases you may loose maybe 15 - 20mm depending on the isolation bush's design.

But ride height is fundamentally determined by the spring and long term ride height determined by the quality of the spring. Poorly made springs (crap steel or poorly scragged springs) will sag over time, sometimes quite a bit. As such, I'd thing that the concept of "bush sag" is just a fob off from a mob that have poor quality control or simply made a defective spring, especially if they weren't explicit as to which bush was the problem. Either that or the installer didn't relieve any bush tension when installing the springs or didn't identify worn bushes when installing them... Either way, poor support from the mod you bought the springs from.

Well, I challenged my own conventions today and bought a set of front and rear Koni's and Kings SL's. I couldn't pass up on the Koni's at the same price as the OEM Monroe's. The downside is they're inserts. The upside is, they're Koni inserts.
I was going for Bilstein B8's, as it looks like they make full struts. Turns out they don't. They're OEM struts with Bilstein inserts. It only cost me $110 more for all 4 Koni shocks, compared to 1 Bilstein. So the decision was easy.
I watched the Koni insert vid and it looks simple enough. I'm hoping the SL's will only be 10mm or so lower than current. My car has sagged 10-15mm lower than stock ovet the past 6+ years.
I also grabbed a set of front and rear Remsa pads.
So, when it all arrives, it's off to my suspension and brake bloke to fit it all up, including machining my T3 rotors, a fluid flush, wheel alignment, and new strut bearings and mounts. I cant wait! I reckon it will drive like new and handle and brake like a dream. My only niggling doubts are that the ride hieight may be too low, or too harsh. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestion. I'll report back when it's all done.

Sometimes it's what makes sense that guides you. Bilstein is not 4 times better than Koni so why pay 4 times more :) Keep us posted with this

I'm not surprised your VF Redline is miles ahead of a moded VX. I loved the stock FE3 in my Redline too. But, it's well past its use by date in terms of the shocks. The rears in paticluar. I have done a fair bit of towing my heavy boat ove the years though. So, getting 6+ years and nearly 100k is pretty good. I miss the sharp handling though and I dont like the body roll. So, it was time for an upgrade.
As good as the stock FE3 is, I have little doubt the Koni's will out perform the stock Monroe's. As far as the rest of the FE3 suspension goes, I think any gains from after market gear would be marginal and would cost a motza.

    Will do mate.
    I reckon they're a bargain @ $495 from Holmart. Plus $25 freight.

    https://www.holmart.com.au/koni-ve-vf-wm-wn-fsd-front-rear-shock-absorber-kit

Order yesterday arvo. Arrive at lunchtime today.

You can really feel the progressive FSD technology. Push slowly and they are easy to compress. Push hard, or fast & jittery movements and they tighten up instantly. I'm keen to get these installed. Hurry up King springs and brake pads!
