I just put some p6000 on and they are great. $109 at bob jane. second best tyre i have driven on (dunlop w1's were great).

The older the tyre the harder it gets, the elasticity in the rubber deteriorates and although it might last for ever, it will be like driving on ice. Truck drivers use this trick for their trailer tyres, they buy a few and put them in the shed for a couple of years and they last longer. Also they tend to perish, I wouldn't want to be driving on the highway when the sidewall blows out.

For the record I use a cheap brand that I can get for $69, only run stockies so I don't need expensive tyres, so far they have done 70 000kms and still going.

 

Many years ago as a tyre aged it got harder and you could get many more kms out of them. A mate got 80,000kms out of a set of mitchies on his LH torana sedan - steel belts hanging out and you wouldnt drive it in the wet...

New tyre technology has better rubber/oil compound and they dont harden as much as they used to. Only thing is if the tyre has been left out in the sun and started to perish - can fly apart and rip bumpers off and damage mud guards.

 

When I had my 15's, I used Bob Jane all rounder and they lasted pretty good, though they are a cheap tyre. I would recommend them.

I've had a set of these on my VN for about 6 months. Absolutley awesome, great handling, superb in the wet, smooth and look great too.

I would look at Yokohama C-Drives for about $150ea (215/60/15) fitted, have them on the Pulsar and VP, have done over 40,000km in them in 9 months in the Pulsar and they still stick like new. Great in the wet and the dry.

 

I had Front Bridgestone RE88 205/65/R15. Back Bridgestone ER30 Turanza 225/60/R15.. The Turanza's are bloody great gripping tyres in all weather, But in the wet they are very confident and impressive.
After i had a accident the fronts got toasted and flat spotted, So i had too stick the rears on the front and get my old ****ty remoulds from the shed on the rear.
Now the Turanza's are on the front they are just as impressive too me as they were on the rear, Better grip turning corners turn in harder and in the wet they are flawless cutting through puddles with ease. So when i get some $$$ i'm going too get a new set for the front of the Turanza's.

 

depends what you want to do, I've got 205/65 Nankangs from Tempe tyres and they were $75 each and they are good value for money. The VP is just a daily though.

Previously I had a Peugeot 306 GTi6 which came factory with P6000s and I personally thought they were a **** tyre especially for one with pretenses of being performance orientated - so I'd save yourself paying the premium. Putting on semi slicks solved that little problem.

 

I run Bridgestones on the front, Used Tyres got them for $20 each.. 205/65/R15
Simex on the rear 215/65/R15

I previously ran Pirelli P6000 Drago's and they were horrible in the rain. Also have ran Falkens and they done a awesome job in the rain

 

i used to run POS A TRACTION's $89 each at bj's and yes they are cheap and they dont have the best grip ( still better than some ) but they get the best mileage that i have ever got and i still have 2 up the front of my sle.

 

Dunlop SP300A $119 each - done 50k on mine and they have heaps left.

 

I've used CLEAR HP166's, **** tyre, NO grip wet or dry, understeer city at the front end, oversteer city at the back .

Federal SS595's = GREAT Tyre, and not too expensive.

These worked well on our wagon and have aged well. They actually grip surprisingly well on the motorkhana skid pan. Ours have lost some of their grip in the wet but they are 3 years old.

In any case, with a relatively powerful rear wheel drive car with a live axle you should get the best and newest tyres you can afford. A good new tyre makes a huge difference in an emergency situation, particularly in the wet.

Or think of it this way, your insurance excess is probably higher than the cost of a good a tyre.

OK, for the original question.
If you want those tyres from the wreckers give them a good looking over. Obviously the car they were on ended up at the wreckers so look for flat spots or any damage no matter how small. Remember to look across the tread as well to make sure the tread is consistent as crashed cars don't always skid in a straight line.
If you still want to buy them ask for a two or three day money back guarantee as some problems are not evident until they are fitted, inflated and then driven on.
Offer them $50 for both as $40 each is too much or just buy two new tyres. That way they should at least be safe.
